How to Waterproof a Balcony: Step-by-Step Guide

This research stack provides a comprehensive, contractor-grade installation guide for waterproofing balconies using the FM ELEVATION system. The content is structured as a sequential, step-by-step process beginning with substrate assessment and pre-installation conditions, moving through SP1 primer application, S60 membrane installation and seam sequencing, and addressing critical details such as transitions, penetrations, wall terminations, and scupper sequencing with membrane integration.

A key emphasis throughout the stack is procedural discipline and quality control. Step 6 functions as a mandatory hold point, requiring full membrane cure and visual inspection before any subsequent layer, including drainage mat, protection board, or topping material, may be installed. This sequencing requirement reflects the system's sensitivity to installation order, and the stack reinforces this with dedicated guidance on drainage mat placement between the waterproofing membrane and the topping slab or paver system, followed by a final protection board and pre-topping inspection phase.

The stack also includes a practical field reference documenting the five most common balcony waterproofing failure points observed during installation and flood testing, complete with root causes and approved field fixes. Together, these cards form a structured, end-to-end resource covering both the technical installation sequence and real-world troubleshooting for wood-framed and concrete balcony assemblies using the FM ELEVATION system.
