THE OPEN
Some players get hot. Jeremiah Smith is rewriting the Heisman market.
Seven days after taking over as the favorite, Smith walked into Iowa and put together another statement performance. Prediction markets reacted right away.
On Kalshi, his Heisman odds have doubled from roughly 24% to 48%. That's close to half the market, and it leaves the rest of the field far behind.
Moves like that don't happen often.
This is a full repricing.
Here's what the market is saying to start the week.
THE BIG TRADE
JEREMIAH SMITH TO WIN THE HEISMAN
YES at 48%
Trade the Jeremiah Smith Heisman market on Kalshi
Receivers aren't supposed to be priced like this in October.
The Heisman belongs to quarterbacks until somebody gives voters a reason to look elsewhere. Smith is giving them that reason.
The Iowa game followed the four-touchdown outburst that put him at the top of the race a week earlier. What's different this time is how the market responded.
24% turned into 48%.
The next tier of candidates sits around 10%.
The market has stopped asking whether Jeremiah Smith can win the Heisman. Now it's asking whether anyone can catch him.
The argument against buying at 48% is easy to make. There's plenty of football still to play. A receiver also needs someone to get him the ball, and one quiet Saturday can shake up an awards race in a hurry.
But Smith has what counts most in awards voting right now: momentum.
Each week brings another moment that tells the same story.
He's the best player on one of college football's biggest programs, and his numbers are getting harder and harder to wave away.
At 48%, the discount is gone.
THE TRADE: YES
THREE TRADES
1. OHIO STATE TO WIN THE BIG TEN
YES at 45%
Trade the Big Ten Championship market on Kalshi
Smith's market isn't the only Ohio State price on the move.
The Buckeyes are now around 45% to win the Big Ten, more than double the odds of the next closest team.
This is where Smith's rise becomes bigger than an awards storyline.
If Ohio State's offense keeps building around him, traders may still be underestimating how far ahead of the conference the Buckeyes really are.
Iowa was the type of road test that should make the market more comfortable backing Ohio State, not betting against it.
THE TRADE: YES
2. KANSAS CITY TO WIN THE SUPER BOWL
WATCH at 9%
Trade the NFL Championship market on Kalshi
Some things never change. The Chiefs sticking around is one of them.
Kansas City is still undefeated, and yet the title market gives the Chiefs only about a 9% shot at another Super Bowl.
That puts them among the more intriguing teams on the board.
In a 32-team league, 9% isn't a bargain. But Kansas City has spent years proving the same point: the regular season is mostly about getting Patrick Mahomes to January with a roster that can compete.
Nobody's questioning whether the Chiefs are good.
The real question is how long the market can hold them under double digits if the wins keep coming.
We're staying on the sidelines for now.
THE TRADE: WATCH
3. MILWAUKEE TO WIN THE WORLD SERIES
YES at 25%
Trade Milwaukee's World Series market on Kalshi
In October, six months of baseball can come down to six innings.
Milwaukee is sitting at roughly 25% to win the World Series, up around seven points over the last week.
The Dodgers still hold a slight edge, but the space between the two teams has gotten surprisingly narrow.
That's significant, because in October, reputation usually carries more weight than recent form. Los Angeles is the name everyone knows. Milwaukee is looking more and more like the team traders actually trust.
The Brewers don't have to win over the country.
They just have to keep advancing.
THE TRADE: YES
THE MISPRICING
THE REST OF THE HEISMAN FIELD
Smith at 48% is worth paying attention to.
Everyone else sitting at roughly 10% or less might be worth more attention.
The Heisman market has shifted from a competition to something closer to a vote of confidence.
That's a lot of certainty for early October.
Still, awards markets run on storylines nearly as much as stats. Right now, Smith has the narrative, the highlight reel and the momentum.
This week's question isn't whether 48% is too high.
It's whether the rest of the field has already been priced too low.
THE WATCHLIST
JEREMIAH SMITH
One more huge Saturday and 48% could be 60% before anyone blinks. A quiet one could throw the whole Heisman market back open.
THE BIG TEN
Ohio State is starting to pull away from the rest of the conference. Keep an eye on whether that lead keeps widening before the Buckeyes' toughest games arrive.
THE MLB PLAYOFFS
Milwaukee and Los Angeles are now close enough that one playoff game could flip the World Series board entirely.
THE CHIEFS
Kansas City at 9% looks a lot different if the loss column still reads zero two weeks from now.
ONE NUMBER
48%
A wide receiver now owns almost half of the Heisman market.
A week ago, that would have seemed like a bold call.
Now it's the consensus.
We'll find out Friday whether the market got out in front of itself.
The bell is open.
