The Chalk Runs Dry as the Groups Close
The Scoreboard
Three for five as the group stage wrapped up. The market was spot-on with the redemption arcs (Spain bouncing back, Mexico going perfect) and the one sure thing nobody could screw up (a No. 1 pick that was written in ink years ago). Then a German juggernaut and a USMNT finale served as a reminder that “favorite” is mostly just good marketing. Two weeks into this thing, the chalk is running low on alibis.
The Calls
🟢 HIT — Spain to win their group (market ~58% YES)
Last week, Spain took home our Biggest Whiff award for getting held by Cape Verde. Looks like word got back to them. They followed it up by thumping Saudi Arabia 4-0 and edging Uruguay 1-0 to win the group comfortably. Turns out nothing fires up the world’s second-best team quite like getting roasted in a newsletter. Happy to help, Spain.
🟢 HIT — Mexico to top Group A (market ~64% YES)
Three games, three wins for the hosts, finished off with a 3-0 takedown of Czechia. No draws, no red-card sideshow, just Mexico quietly taking care of business while the rest of the tournament burned. The market got it right and got to enjoy a little peace and quiet for once.
🔴 MISS — Germany to beat Ecuador (market ~68% YES)
Four stars on the shirt, a reputation as an unstoppable machine, and a 2-1 loss to Ecuador. The market bought the crest again. That crest has now shown up at back-to-back World Cups and left early both times. Eventually, “legendary program” stops paying out.
🟢 HIT — AJ Dybantsa to go No. 1 in the NBA Draft (market ~92% YES)
The Washington Wizards grabbed the BYU star with the first pick, just like every mock draft has been saying since he was about eight. In a week full of favorites falling on their faces, the only true lock was a teenager heading to an 18-win team. The market got the easiest call on the board right, and it goes in the win column all the same. We’ll take it.
🔴 MISS — USA to win their final group match (market ~60% YES)
Türkiye beat the USA 3-2 in the group finale, which reads like a disaster until you realize the Americans had already locked up first place and were basically playing the backups. The market went with the win; the reserves took the loss; the table didn’t care. Dropped the game, kept the group, baffled the bettors.
Biggest Whiff of the Week 🔴
Uruguay at ~85%.
Uruguay came in as a legit dark horse for the whole tournament and an almost-guaranteed escape from a group featuring a first-time qualifier and Saudi Arabia. They didn’t escape. Two draws, a loss to Spain, and a ticket home, wrapping things up with more cards on the last matchday (four, one of them red) than goals scored all tournament (three). The market paid for a contender. Uruguay handed over a warning label.
Best Call of the Week 🟢
Cape Verde. Again.
The market dismissed them before a ball was kicked: a 67th-ranked debutant from a country with a smaller population than Fresno. All they did was draw every one of their three games, including the 0-0 against Spain we called a whiff last week, finish second, and become the smallest nation in history to reach a World Cup knockout round. Zero wins, and they’re still in it. The prize for all that? Lionel Messi and Argentina. Believers got a storybook run and a seat in the Round of 32.
Now Open — go vote
The groups are finished, and the knockouts kick off tomorrow: one loss and you’re out, no do-overs, pure chaos. Three to call:
- Will Cape Verde stun Argentina in the Round of 32? The smallest country ever to make the knockouts, up against Messi and the defending champs. The market has them around 7%. Your heart is screaming yes. Your spreadsheet is pleading with you to calm down. — yes or no, and why.
- Will the USA reach the quarterfinals? The hosts won their group and get Bosnia first. Home turf, genuine talent, and a draw that opened up nicely. Market sits around 30%. — yes or no, and why.
- Will the Fed hike rates before year’s end? Two weeks ago they swung from “maybe a cut” to “probably a hike,” and the market has leaned that direction ever since, sitting around 55%. Just talk, or the real thing? — yes or no, and why.
Catch you next week. Knockout football starts now, which means nobody is safe. Ask Uruguay how that goes.
