The Phoenix

My next stop on the Downtown Home Tour was to see a unit in the Phoenix building. It's facade is currently undergoing a restoration. The original building on the site burned in the 1897 "million dollar fire" of Gay Street (see 4th, 5th, and 6th images for the original building, the burned building, and the replacement building historical photos from McClung Historical Collection). The replacement building (current building) was built in 1899. The building was restored and redeveloped in its current configuration at the beginning of this century. The unit on the tour had windows above the kitchen cabinets to let light into the bedroom in the next room. #downtownknoxville #classicalrevival #knoxvilletn
