Fall in North Georgia is one of my favorite times of the year. The temperatures finally cooperate, the leaves begin to change color, and suddenly, a Saturday in the mountains sounds much more appealing than another weekend of errands.

The best part? You don’t have to go far. From most of North Atlanta, you can be picking apples, wandering through a corn maze, or watching the leaves change in less than two hours.

So, if fall break has unexpectedly arrived and you’re looking for some fun activities to enjoy, here are a few of my favorite ways to get out and embrace the season.

Pick Apples in Ellijay

Let’s start with the obvious choice: apples!

Ellijay is practically synonymous with fall in Georgia, and October is the perfect time to make the drive north. B.J. Reece Orchards and Hillcrest Orchards offer apple picking, farm activities, fresh cider, and a variety of treats that taste even better when enjoyed outdoors.

If you’re looking to make a day of it, the Georgia Apple Festival takes place on October 10–11 and October 17–18. With hundreds of vendors, food, crafts, and entertainment, there’s something for everyone—and yes, you should definitely bring home some apples.

Or an apple pie. Or both. I’m not judging!

Get Lost in a Corn Maze

There’s something about a corn maze that instantly transports us back to our childhood.

Jaemor Farms in Alto is a fantastic fall destination with a corn maze, hayrides, pumpkins, and other farm activities. You can also find plenty of fall fun around Ellijay, including corn mazes and farm adventures.

My advice? Don’t let the person who insists they have an “excellent sense of direction” take charge. We’ve all been there.

Spend the Day in Dahlonega

Dahlonega is beautiful any time of the year, but fall truly transforms it into a magical place.

The annual Gold Rush Days festival returns on October 17–18, filling the historic downtown square with arts and crafts vendors, food, live entertainment, a parade, and a variety of activities for the kids.

Even if you don’t make it for the festival, Dahlonega is worth the drive. Stroll around the square, grab lunch, browse the shops, and take the scenic route home.

Sometimes, the best part of a fall day trip is simply not being in a hurry.

Go Leaf Peeping in Blue Ridge

Another suggestion that requires absolutely no athletic ability is to get in the car and look at the trees!

Blue Ridge is a beautiful fall destination, and the drive there is half the fun. Stop at Mercier Orchards for apples and baked goodies, wander around downtown Blue Ridge, grab lunch, and enjoy the mountain views.

If you’re there from October 10–11, check out Fall Arts in the Park, where artists, craftspeople, food, and music come together in the middle of all that gorgeous fall scenery.

And don’t be afraid to take the long way home. That’s kind of the point.

Make a Pumpkin Stop in Dawsonville

For a classic fall afternoon, head to Burt’s Pumpkin Farm in Dawsonville. Pick out a pumpkin, take a hayride, and enjoy the kind of simple family fun that doesn’t require a screen, an app, or a reservation.

Dawsonville is also home to the Mountain Moonshine Festival, which takes place from October 23–25. It features classic cars, live music, vendors, and plenty of local history.

So grab the kids, invite the grandparents, pack a few snacks, and hit the road.

One of the things I love most about living in North Atlanta is how easy it is to get somewhere that feels completely different without spending half the day getting there.

Mountains, apples, pumpkins, festivals, and changing leaves are all waiting just a short drive north.

And if you ask me, that’s one more reason to love calling North Atlanta home.
