Depression, Suicidal Ideation and the Big Five Personality Traits

The article explores the association between the Big Five personality traits (openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism) and depression, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts in a sample of American undergraduate students. The study found that neuroticism was positively associated with depression, while conscientiousness, extraversion, and agreeableness were negatively associated with depression. However, the Big Five personality traits did not predict a history of suicide attempts, although neuroticism scores were associated with a history of suicidal ideation.
