Getting Settled in Puerto Escondido: Arrival, SIM, Cash, Groceries & Safety
Mexico's official immigration authority. Check the entry rules for your nationality before you fly, and note how many days the officer grants you on arrival, since that sets how long you can stay at the villa on a tourist entry.
The main first-class bus line into Puerto Escondido. Since the new Oaxaca–Puerto Escondido highway opened, the coach from Oaxaca City takes roughly three hours, and ADO also runs longer routes from Mexico City and elsewhere. Buses arrive at the ADO terminal in town, a short taxi ride from the villa. Prefer to fly? Puerto Escondido's airport (PXM) is just outside town, with official taxis at arrivals.
Mexico's largest mobile network, with the widest coverage along the Oaxacan coast. Pick up a prepaid SIM at a Telcel store, an OXXO or the airport, and bring your passport for activation. Handy as a backup hotspot and for WhatsApp, which is how most local businesses communicate.
A full-service bank branch on Av. Alfonso Pérez Gasga in Centro, open weekdays, and a reliable place to withdraw pesos. Cash still matters here: colectivos, taxis and market stalls usually don't take cards, so keep small bills on hand.
The big supermarket in Puerto Escondido Centro, a short taxi or colectivo ride from the villa. Good for a first-week stock-up: groceries, toiletries, cleaning supplies, beach basics and snacks for the shared kitchen.
Puerto Escondido's main private hospital, in Sector Reforma near Centro, open 24 hours with emergency care, internal medicine, a lab and a 24-hour pharmacy. The go-to for urgent or specialist care on this stretch of the Oaxacan coast. Emergency lines and the main reception number are listed on their site. In an emergency, call 911.
Check before you grab a Surfbreak board. Zicatela, known as the Mexican Pipeline, is a powerful beach break that gets heavy and is best left to experienced surfers when it's big. Newer surfers usually head to La Punta or Carrizalillo instead. Watch the swell size, swim near others, and when in doubt, don't go out.
