Working with her was a complete and utter joy at every moment. She has this way of defining the problem systematically, organizing herself and everyone around her, and then executing the solution flawlessly every time. She's incredible with people, bestowing dignity on everyone she works with, no matter how "important" others may view them. She humbly seeks wise counsel before embarking on a task, "does her homework" so to speak, and then dives in with her whole heart and mind. She and I partnered to pull off the mission management of multiple cargo resupply missions, and I was so grateful to have her by my side. She also prepared an entire training curriculum based on her experience to on-ramp new mission integrators and cargo specialists at SpaceX, which is unbelievably detailed, thorough, and has been so helpful to countless on my team. I literally just referred back to it today - long after she has moved on from SpaceX to other exciting endeavors, and her words are still helping me do my job better and more efficiently. Courtney is the definition of a team player, building up others to do their best work without ever seeking the credit for herself. Our Eos Atomics team, in collaboration with Kevin Bowcutt and the University of Maryland, has been exploring direct fusion-to-air heat exchanger windows for hypersonic propulsion applications. This work tackles a demanding set of challenges - surviving extreme temperatures, radiation, and pressure differentials, while maintaining chemical compatibility in both oxygen and hydrogen-rich environments. One particularly compelling outcome of this study is the identification of novel hypersonic operating envelopes that appear well suited for direct fusion-driven propulsion. These occur at extreme altitudes (>130,000 ft), where dynamic pressure and thermal loads are significantly reduced - beyond the limits of conventional combustion, yet still firmly within the realm of sustained flight. We’re looking forward to sharing these results at SciTech and engaging in discussions on what this could mean for the future of high-altitude, high-speed flight. Morgan, Jefferies, and Wells Fargo Securities are serving as lead bookrunning managers for the offering, with an estimated IPO date of August 7, 2025. • Founded in 2017, Firefly differentiates itself by claiming to be the only company capable of launching satellites to orbit with approximately 24-hour notice and achieving a fully successful Moon landing. Why it matters Firefly’s IPO signals growing investor confidence in the commercial space sector, potentially validating rapid-response satellite deployment as a lucrative market. The $5.5B valuation could set pricing benchmarks for other space startups going public. The round was led by Balerion Space Ventures, with participation from IllinoisVentures GP LLC, MFV Partners, and Access Holdings Samara’s vision: Samara is building a new generation of high-stability satellites, called Hummingbirds, designed to detect the faintest RF emissions from Earth and its atmosphere. The problem: Modern satellites are optimized for cost and speed, at the expense of: ⚠️ Signal instability reducing data quality and reliability ⚠️ Limited ability to detect aircraft radar, ship transponders, and advanced weather systems ⚠️ Inefficiencies that translate into lost time, resources, and data What Samara does differently: At the core of Hummingbird is MSAC (Multifunctional Structures for Attitude Control), an active vibration-cancellation system. Instead of passively damping movements and jitters, MSAC actively eliminates them, allowing for: ✅ Extreme satellite stability for ultra-weak RF signal detection ✅ Support for much larger antennas and solar arrays without sacrificing agility ✅ Cut satellite size and weight without impacting performance Traction: Samara recently launched its technology demonstrator, “Cicada” with SpaceX and received Non-dilutive funding including a $4M SpaceWERX Tactical Funding Increase (TACFI) award and a NASA Phase I contract. These are in addition to more than $800m in LOIs that Samara holds with aerospace contractors and companies. Samara's plans to deploy a full constellation of these stabilised satellites, enabling faint radio signals detection for dual-use application: Defence: tracking fast-moving targets, including hypersonic missiles, with precision beyond existing technology. Commercial/Civil: providing continuous monitoring and awareness of assets across the globe such as vessels and airplanes. What’s next: 🚀 First mission Hummingbird-1 planned for 2027 🏭 Scaling operations with a new 11,200-sq-ft production facility We’re excited to back Samara Aerospace alongside Balerion Space Ventures and What If Ventures, and are excited for what’s to come. The companies announced Monday that Voyager will make an investment in the "low eight figures" in Max Space to accelerate that startup's development of inflatable modules. The companies announced last month they would partner to combine their capabilities to offer lunar habitats to NASA as the agency begins plans for a lunar base. An end-to-end space mission company can reduce costs and headaches. Gilmour Space landed $200M + last month and while most will recognize them as a launch company, they build satellites and provide end-to-end mission services. Space is fun, so a lot of companies get caught up in the Sat development when they really need to focus on their payload and business plan. Go-to-market is hard, just like space. Once you get to space, then the really hard part kicks in: generating revenue and customer acquisition. Many will wish they outsourced the space part earlier to focus on the sales and relationship building. I’m not saying you can’t do it on your own. But you should at least explore outsourcing the “easy” part Gilmour Space Technologies #smallsat #space #launch 5 1 Comment Regan Patrick Anduril Industries • 2K followers This is a remarkable study, revealing some of the most important challenges facing aerospace today.
