She takes the time to get to know their stories,” added Dining Room Leader, Lisa. If Ellie gets a free moment to step away from the dining room, she heads straight to the back to check in with the Heart of House Teammates to ask if there is anything she can do for them. Initially, his parents didn’t think it was the right decision but Jason was able to gain their support. “He was still passionate about the military, being able to do something that mattered,” said Jason’s mom, Pam Estes. In December 2005 their fears were realized when Jason’s Humvee was hit by an explosion. Today, the family is dedicated to Jason’s care as well as advocating for him and other injured veterans and their families. “My parents are the world to me. I don’t know where I’d be without them,” Jason said. “Basically, what happened to me, this is a speed bump. The explosion, it’s a speed bump.” LEARN MORE about stories of service
