Can I get a Temporary Protective Order (TPO) at the Police Department? Milton Police do not issue TPOs. These are issued by the local sheriff's office where the individual you are filing against resides. For more on TPOs, including how to file, visit our Temporary Protective Order page . Can I get my fingerprints done at the Police Department? Generally, yes. Fingerprinting for Alcohol and Pouring Permits is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 4 p.m. All other fingerprinting is available by appointment only; please call 678-242-2606 to schedule an appointment. The cost is $30 for the first card and $5 for each additional card. (Note: Special precautions related to the COVID-19 pandemic may affect Milton's fingerprinting policies and procedures. It's a good idea to call before coming.) Do you do background checks? And, if so, how much do they cost? Yes, Milton Police offers statewide background checks. These documents are typically ready within one to three days at a cost of $20. To request a background check, you will need to complete a form at the Police Department and present a valid government-issued ID. During normal business operations, background checks may be requested Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. and can usually be completed that same day. Print out the form and either: 1) Bring it to Milton City Hall, specifically to the Finance window, with the required $15 payment. Administrative staff will be happy to connect you to the detective assigned to your case. How do I deal with an animal that has been hurt or endangered? If you see a loose dog or other animal, contact the owner if known. If you don't know who owns the animal, contact Fulton County Animal Services at 404.794.0358. Keep children inside. Wait for Animal Services to catch the animal before going outside. Do not pick up or touch injured animals. A bite from an animal may necessitate medical treatment for the injury and shots for rabies. This is especially true if the animal runs away before it can be caught and tested. If you know the animal and it is familiar with you, try to contain it to a fenced yard but avoid pulling on it. If you injure it, it may bite you. How do I get a Temporary Protective Order (TPO)? There must be a recent threat or act of physical violence or stalking in order for a person to obtain a Temporary Protective Order, or TPO. The TPO must be filed in the county in which the abuser resides. If the abuser lives out of state, the TPO may be filed in the Georgia county where you live or where the violence occurred. You may file for a TPO at the Fulton County Superior Clerk's office. You must know the abuser's name as well as his or her current work and/or home address. After your paperwork is processed, it will be presented to a judge. You must be ready to tell the judge about the violence that has occurred. The judge will want to know if you believe the abuse will continue. If the judge grants you a TPO, the sheriff's office will serve the abuser with a copy of the order. A hearing will be held within 30 days so the judge can hear from both sides. You must attend the hearing or your order will expire. At the hearing, the judge will decide the length of the TPO. Here, the court can also decide other issues such as temporary custody, support for your children or you, and substance abuse treatment for your abuser. If there is a new threat of violence, you can go back to court before the TPO expires and ask that the order be extended or made permanent. How do I report about a traffic complaint? If someone applies before June 1, 2025, for instance, the registration is good through June 1, 2029. On June 2, 2025, the new expiration is June 1, 2030. And so on. And, if so, at what hours? Yes, certain people can solicit in Milton if  they have a permit issued by the City. They must have this permit on them at all times. There are exceptions. Individuals who are soliciting for charitable, political or other nonprofit purposes do not need a permit provided that all sales proceeds are owned and used by the nonprofit organization. Residential: Incorrect key pad procedures Failure to train other authorized users (i.e. sitters, relatives, children, houseguests, etc.) Failure to secure doors and windows before arming your alarm Commercial: Use of incorrect key pad codes Failure to train other authorized users (i.e., employees, custodial workers, delivery personnel, etc.) Failure to notify your monitoring facility of unscheduled openings or closings (for businesses using a set schedule) Failure to update authorized personnel list with your monitoring facility Failure to secure doors and windows before arming your alarm What can you do to reduce false alarms? Ensure authorized users are familiar with your alarm system's operation Secure all doors and windows prior to arming your alarm Be aware of changes in the environment (i.e., new animals, design changes, seasonal decorations, plants, etc.) that might have an impact on your alarm Notify your monitoring facility of any changes (i.e., houseguests, name changes, new employees, employee terminations, etc.) What constitutes "family violence"? Georgia Code 19-13-1 defines "family violence" as particular types of crimes to or between people who have familial relationships to (i.e. are related to) each other. Such crimes include battery, assault, stalking, criminal damage to property, unlawful restraint, criminal trespass and any felony. The people must be connected to each other as past or present spouses, parents of the same child, parents and children, stepparents and stepchildren or other persons living or formerly living in the same household. What does the fee cover? Registration fees offset the cost of administering the program and ensure that the user maintains accurate data in the system for police response to alarm calls. This fee applies to both residences and businesses. What is a false alarm? A false alarm is any activation of a signal from a burglar or fire alarm system which elicits a response from the Police or Fire-Rescue Department when there is no emergency or actual/threatened criminal activity. This definition includes, without being limited, to: any burglar alarm system activated as a result of weather, negligence, accident, mechanical failure, electrical failure, electrical surge, signals activated intentionally in non-emergency situations, and signals activated where the actual cause of such activation is unknown. There is a rebuttable presumption that an activated burglar or fire alarm system signal is a false alarm if the responding personnel, after following normal procedures in their response and investigation, find no evidence of unauthorized entry, criminal activity or other emergency. An activated alarm system signal shall not be considered a false alarm if: Police or fire is notified to cancel its response by the alarm user or alarm user's monitoring agent prior to the time emergency personnel arrive on scene. The burglar or fire alarm system signal was intentionally activated by an individual based upon a reasonable belief that an emergency or actual or threatened criminal activity requiring immediate response existed. The burglar or fire alarm system signal was activated by lightning or other act of nature resulting in an electrical surge. Additionally, the damage must be shown by a written report by a licensed alarm system contractor who conducted an inspection of the system at the premises and personally observed such damage. What is domestic standby? If you need to return to your house to get your things, or you don't want to let the batterer back into your home to pick up his or her things, you can request a domestic standby. A domestic standby is a police officer who is present to make sure everyone is safe. The police will only allow a limited time for the person to gather personal items and will not involve themselves in any disputes over property ownership. Stalking is the obsessive following, observing, or contacting of another person, or the obsessive attempt to engage in any of these activities. This includes following the person to certain places to see where they live or what the person does on a daily basis. It also includes seeking and obtaining one's personal information in order to contact him or her, such as looking for his or her details on computers, electoral rolls, personal files and other material containing the person's private information without his or her consent. In the state of Georgia, stalking can be grounds for obtaining a TPO, regardless if you are related to the abuser or not. What should I do if I see an abandoned or foreclosed building within city limits? Any abandoned or foreclosed buildings should be reported to Code Enforcement using our Violations form.
