Then The Traitors had us wishing we, too, were scheming our way around a sizable Scottish castle . Murderous endings aside, both tapped into the same fantasy: gathering your favourite people under one roof for a gloriously slow weekend away. That longing has fuelled a boom in bookings for big group-friendly houses. We're trading all-inclusive hotels for beautifully designed rentals, splitting the cost between friends and, if we're feeling fancy, calling in a private chef each night – all for little more than the price of a package holiday. Goodbye, Greek islands – we want long lunches in Cornish pubs. And alpine escapes? They’re easily swapped for Salomon-clad stomps through the Peak District. All with your chosen gang, spread across a house that's just as much a destination as its surroundings. Spread across five houses and apartments, there’s technically room for 24 of you to stay. The headliner, Atlanta House, sleeps eight and is the ideal base for a big group looking to spend some quality time together (backdropped by salty sea air and fabulous fish and chips). Get the ferry across to The Mariners for lunch if the weather’s nice (the elementally-exposed crossing isn’t worth it in the wind and rain) or hike the craggy coastline for an hour to Padstow for Rick Stein’s famed fish and chips. There’s a sand-side sauna on Trevone Bay’s beach, but be warned that it will cost you £20 a pop and you can’t rock up without having booked a slot. For the design-conscious traveller, HAM Interiors worked on the decor of one of the smaller houses, The Net Loft, but the same cosy coastal vibe is consistent throughout each of the properties. Expect to leave wanting to replicate the impeccable oceanfront aesthetic in your own home, even if you live miles away from the sea – there are only so many ceramic fish I can hang in my north London bathroom before it begins to raise some eyebrows. ARC Peaks, Cheshire Sleeps 30, from £72pp a night If you opt to drive to this Cheshire treasure, you’ll be rewarded with winding roads through bucolic valleys peppered with sheep. Sweeping verdant views tug at your sleeve, urging you to slow down for photos. ARC Peaks is a 200-year-old former post office that has been meticulously renovated by Parti architecture studio, and designed with groups in mind. Each double bedroom has its own en-suite, while the beautifully decorated attic dorm is a far cry from the kids’ camp bunk room the word “dorm” conjures, with 12 curtained sleeping nooks, plush bedding and each napping space slightly bigger than a single bed. There’s plenty of celebrating space, too, from long 20-seat communal tables and a 12m-long heated pool to a wood-fired hot tub and pizza oven (it should be said that our pizzas were inedible, though we suspect that was user error). While there are lovely walking trails nearby, the real magic lies in hunkering down behind the house’s big red doors. If your group fancies a niche activity to write home about, one of the world’s only water sommeliers lives just a few streets away and offers tastings that might leave even the biggest tap-water loyalists questioning everything. Curious visitors will be endlessly entertained by the unexpected design choices at Riverbank , as well as its generously stocked bookshelves and comfy reading corners. The village of Hunworth also has a rich history, so a stroll around local lanes brings with it a rooting in heritage. You’ll spy medieval castles and a Grade II-listed Anglo-Saxon mill beautifying the banks of the nearby River Glaven. Once you’ve walked up an appetite, nothing beats a riverside terrace dinner back at the ranch, with the sounds of the chalk stream competing with the cacophony of birdsong for your attention. There’s a cast-iron tub to relax in, too, which is perfectly positioned by a big window so you can stare at the wildlife in the garden as you soak away residual city stresses. Tongue-and-groove wood panelled ceilings, an antique desk nook and an exposed brick fireplace in the kitchen all add a quirky charm. Beware, though, of the taxidermy spiders in the kitchen if you’re travelling with any arachnophobes. They can give even the bravest of spider-saving volunteers quite the fright. Craig Y Don, Anglesey Sleeps 20, from £58pp a night This storied property will have you researching and relishing its royal roots from the moment you cross its threshold. Rumoured to have been visited by Prince Edward with his mistress Lily Langtry in the late 1800s, its rooms are all fabulously ostentatious, completely unique and wonderfully mad. The vista from the tower-turret terrace will stop you in your tracks, especially in the sunshine. The house has a games room (not sure on the slightly gaudy decor in here, I will say), indoor sauna (very sure on everything about this) and a small gym with ample equipment. It boasts not one, but two hot tubs, conveniently placed side by side so you can all while away an afternoon together. If you head into town, grab a pastry from Dylan’s , peruse Awen Menai for books and hit up Hawthorn Yard for trinkets. Plus, the location is one of the most lusted-after in all of the UK because of its burgeoning seafood scene and mind-stilling views. The property’s proximity to the Menai Strait and the various watersports it offers is its real crowning glory, though – you’ll be hard-pressed to prize kids (or big kids) away from an afternoon spent paddleboarding with SUPSkifit or an early-morning RIB ride .
