Olivia Palamountain reports Debuting on February 1, 2025, ÖÖD Hekla Horizon will offer visitors a unique way to experience the country's dramatic landscapes and Northern Lights. The hotel, developed by Estonian brothers Andreas and Jaak Tiik in partnership with local Icelandic entrepreneurs Arnar Jónsson and Ingibjörg Jakobsdóttir, promises to elevate Iceland's traditional cabin tourism with its sophisticated design and panoramic views. The timing of the opening coincides with peak solar activity, which is expected to produce exceptionally vivid aurora displays. Solar physicist Frédéric Clette indicates these favourable viewing conditions could extend until 2028. Andreas Tiik, co-Founder of ÖÖD, says: “From the very beginning, we’ve focused on doing things differently. Our goal with ÖÖD Hekla Horizon was to create the most remarkable Northern Lights hotel, where guests can experience the auroras and the iconic Mount Hekla from their beds, a hot tub, or our all-glass Northern Lights Lounge. This is the ultimate ÖÖDventure—reimagining hospitality, allowing nature to be the star.” The accommodation options include Signature Houses and larger Big Monolith Houses, suitable for couples, families and groups. Each unit features mirror-clad exteriors that reflect the surrounding landscape, with views of the volcano, a crystal-clear river, and the Northern Lights visible from beds and private hot tubs. "Our goal is to create a place where visitors can experience Iceland's power and beauty while we connect with nature and ourselves," says Arnar Jónsson. The location provides easy access to numerous attractions, including hiking routes near Mount Hekla, the highlands, Landmannalaugar, and waterfalls such as Háifoss, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. Ragnhildur Sveinbjarnardóttir, managing director of Visit South Iceland, welcomes the development, noting the region's appreciation for "unique and exciting accommodation options." The project represents the latest venture from ÖÖD House, an Estonian company known for creating minimalist accommodations in striking natural settings worldwide.
