La Nueva Perla is a small restaurant with an additional room for parties. We dined there on a Saturday night and when we walked in (6 PM), nearly every table was taken. We were seated in the back, under the TV, and my husband had a view of the kitchen from his chair. This was not that big of a deal, but I felt it should be noted. If you are looking for an upscale dining experience, this isn't it. It is very much in line with what I find in family owned Mexican Restaurants: tables and chairs, good food, noisy atmosphere. The food is very good. I had a taco and enchilada combination (beans, rice, and salad on the side). The beans were a bit on the runny side, but worked well when scooped up with chips. The salad is really an attempt to fool you into thinking that you are having something nutritious: iceberg lettuce, a large tomato slice, slathered in what tasted like Thousand Island dressing. My husband enjoyed the Pollo Asado (grilled chicken with fries and refried beans), while my daughter had their shrimp burrito (she described it as "huge", which it was, filled with beans, rice, cheese, and very large grilled prawns). My father in law enjoyed a Chile Relleno (spicy, but that's what he likes), and my niece had Tacos al Carbon. They also made their tortilla in-house and they are very good (though they could use a pinch more salt in the dough. But dip them in salsa, or cover them in beans, and you are good to go. So, why the four stars? The service. It's not that it's bad service, it's just VERY slow service. I thought perhaps there was only one waitress, but my husband (who could see the whole restaurant) told me that there were three servers. Here were the issues: *had to ask for a refill on the chips multiple times before getting them *had to ask for refills on the water multiple times *the amount of wait time between the asking and the actual arrival of the items *same for the check. From the time our plates were cleared to the check arriving on the table, about 10 minutes had gone by, and it was another 10 minutes before it was picked up and processed. For some people, this may not be an issue, the time. And if it were just adults at the table, we probably would not have had issue. But if you have children, who know that once the food is gone it's time to go, that can be problematic. Overall, though, very good. We were led to a cute backyard patio where we were seated. As we were perusing the menu, I noticed they have a FULL bar. Now, that's rare for a small family owned restaurant to have these days. I am extremely picky when it comes to Mexican soups and they have the best ones I've ever tried - almost better than my moms.. *gasp* ! The albonigas on Thursday is my favorite, the sopa de res is amazing, and the menudo and pozole on the weekends are perfect. I've made a few extra trip this last month while battling a cold and they definitely make me feel a ton better. They also have bomb ass horchata. Families are having their holiday get together and their foods look yummy good. There were rib-bye and some kind of fried fish. Looks good. While waiting for our food, the server gave us more chips and salsa and pica de Gallo. Wow, our food came and still hot. The pork tamales was great with the hot salsa. The salsa was spicy but very flavorful. I ordered the super shrimp burrito and it was so good and big. I just wished they had put salsa in the burrito so it would be spicy. I also tried the camarones a la diabla and it was also delicious and flavorful. I didnt think it was too spicy but my sister did so be careful if your sensitive to chile. Some good improvements, but our answer as to whether we would return...perhaps. A lot of the charm of La Perla were the old staff...most of them have seen my children and grandchildren grow up. Chile rellenos are delicious. Chicken fajitas are my favorite so good, I am not fond of the red sauce they put on top now, but the rest is my favorite meal in the bay area.
