# Courtyard House by RUFproject

Courtyard House by RUFproject | Citation / Custom Urban House | RD Architecture Awards 2026 “This is a strong design. It hits on everything we look for in a project,” said the jury of this urban infill project in Vancouver. They loved how it was “tidy and spatially efficient” and was able to incorporate outdoor space. “It’s a magic trick to get a courtyard on such a tight site,” they marveled. Sean Pearson, MRAIC, was laser-focused on making sure his clients could experience nature year-round given their urban setting and variable climate. “Vancouver’s a dark and wet city in the winter,” he notes. The courtyard spotlights a Japanese maple set in a naturalistic landscape, a mini-forest that changes with the seasons. The house is also deeply satisfying on an intellectual level: both the ground level and the upper level are similar L-shaped volumes, but they’re offset in order to create a carport and roof deck.
