# Sag Harbor by BMA Architects

Sag Harbor Bay by BMA Architects | Citation / Custom Rural or Vacation House | RD Architecture Awards 2026 A twist on traditional shingle-style homes that populate the Hamptons, this project employs three sculptural volumes that contain a central living space, a primary suite, and kids’ bedrooms. Situated on a waterfront bluff, the pavilions are linked by glass passageways and nestle beneath the trees to avoid competing with the natural canopy and blocking a neighbor’s view. “Less machine-like and more crafted” was the throughline. In each volume, an oculus at the ceiling’s apex animates the interior materials. Locally sourced cedar shingles wrap the exterior walls and asymmetrical, pyramidal roofs, and reappear on the living volume ceiling. “We did a lot of mockups to figure out how to get the coursings to align as they turn the corner, where one angle is super steep and one is super shallow,” says Blaze Makoid, AIA. Other tactile touches include a pebbly surface on the steel window frames and doors, and a fragmented granite floor that extends to the outside terrace. That seamlessness also manifests in the living room’s operable window wall, where the header is hidden in the roof system. “The steel superstructure is pretty complicated—a benefit of having a long-term relationship with the fabricator and working with the structural engineer,” Blaze says.
