# The Tax Senior Women Pay

Carly Vivian 3mo Edited Report this post There's a tax women leaders pay that nobody itemizes. It's not the cost of being interrupted. It's not the cost of being underestimated. It's the cost of carrying. You're still carrying the meeting in your head that everyone else left weeks ago. You carry the disagreement that cost you political capital in October, that's still running in your background in March, while the people you disagreed with have forgotten the meeting happened. That's the carrying tax. And it compounds. By year ten or fifteen of a senior career, women are carrying mental ledgers that the men in the same rooms cleared months ago. The cost of being wrong feels higher, and historically was higher. So when you're right in a way the room doesn't want to hear, the brain still treats it like a wrong answer. It keeps the file open. What the carrying costs, isn't just the bandwidth in the moment. It's everything the bandwidth was supposed to be doing. The decision you made slower because part of your mind was elsewhere. The next room you walked into a half-step less certain. The opportunity you didn't take because the last one was still costing you something. The smudge on your star from the October meeting, becomes the hesitation in the March meeting, which becomes the call you don't make in May. The carrying compounds. Not because you're intentionally dwelling on it. But because the brain learned that keeping the file open was the safer move, and it's still doing what it was trained to do. The senior women who do well in their Second Act, close the file at the same speed the room did. They recognize that carrying a smudge longer than the room does, isn't conscientiousness. It's overhead the original situation didn't earn. Closing the file isn't moving on.
