The only questions were: “Who is paying you?” and “How fast can you get more of them?” It was not advice, but correction. Everything we brought into that room was theory without cash behind it. I thought we had a “plan.” What we actually had was a story that would not survive contact with a market. That moment rewired how I think. Most founders do not lack strategy. They lack customers. Mark Pincus calls it the “All new fails” rule: 1/ Don’t start with “new”: Start with what’s already proven to work. Copy it legally, study it deeply. 2/ Proven means 10 out of 10 users say: “Yeah, that works.” If they don’t, it’s not proven. 3/ Founders fail because they skip the proven phase: They chase novelty before they’ve earned the right to innovate. 4/ The Zynga story began with poker: Same table, same felt, same gameplay, nothing original. 5/ Then they made it better: No downloads. Just click and play. Fundraising stages and titles have lost their anchor. “Pre-Seed,” “Seed,” “Series A,” “Series B”… they don’t mean what they used to. Here's why. Before, the round titles used to signal check size and a capital amount. Now the round titles mostly signal the stage of traction. This is because investor check sizes follow the capital cycle, so when money’s cheap, rounds get bigger earlier; then when money tightens, everything starts snapping back: valuations, round sizes, expectations. But still, stage titles matter. A shared language keeps fundraising efficient. Without it, founders waste time pitching the wrong investors and guessing what “good traction” even means. Just don’t pay attention to the round and check sizes.
