summary: "Step 4 covers critical transition details for waterproofing membranes, including inside corners, pipe penetrations, thresholds, and wall terminations where failures commonly occur. The guide provides specific installation procedures and an inspection checklist to ensure proper membrane continuity and prevent leaks."

# Step 4: Transitions, Penetrations, and Wall Terminations

Step 4: Transitions, Penetrations, and Wall
Terminations
Overview
Transitions are where failures concentrate. Every inside corner, pipe penetration, post base, threshold,
and wall termination needs specific detailing. The membrane field installation can be perfect but a single
unbacked transition will fail a flood test and leak in service.
Inside Corners (Coves)
1. Before priming, apply a sealant cove bead at every inside corner (deck-to-wall, deck-to-curb).
Radius: minimum 1/2 in.
2. Let cove cure before priming over it.
3. Apply SP1 primer over the cove and up the vertical face.
4. Run the S60 membrane continuously from the horizontal field up and over the cove and onto the
vertical face. Minimum 6 in. of membrane on the vertical above the finished topping surface.
5. Press the membrane firmly into the cove radius. No bridging.
Pipe and Post Penetrations (TTP Pockets)
1. Field-form a pocket around each penetration using a compatible sealant or membrane patch before
the main membrane is installed.
2. Apply SP1 primer around the penetration, minimum 6 in. radius.
3. Cut the S60 membrane to fit snug around the penetration. Slit, overlap, and press. No gaps.
4. Apply a membrane patch (minimum 6 in. x 6 in.) over every penetration after the field sheet is in
place. Press firmly on all edges.
5. Inspect: run a gloved finger around every penetration. No lifted edges.
Threshold Conditions
Door thresholds are a common leak point. Membrane must run continuously under the threshold sill
plate and up the back wall.
Minimum 2 in. of membrane under the sill. Coordinate with the door installer before threshold is set.

Wall Terminations
Membrane terminates at a minimum of 2 in. above the finished topping surface (or above the flood
test water level, whichever is higher).
Mechanically fasten the termination bar over the membrane top edge. Seal above the termination
bar with a compatible sealant.
Do not terminate membrane in a horizontal plane. Always terminate on a vertical surface.
Transition Inspection Checklist
[ ] Cove beads at all inside corners, cured before prime
[ ] Minimum 6 in. membrane up all vertical faces
[ ] All penetrations with pocket detail and patch
[ ] Threshold condition confirmed with door installer
[ ] All wall terminations mechanically fastened and sealed
[ ] No bridging, fishmouths, or lifted edges at any transition
