What started as ticket sales and local sponsorships is now an estimated $2.5 trillion-plus global ecosystem spanning media rights, merchandise, wellness, live events, and digital platforms. We did the work this week. With under 80 days until Fanatics Fest, there’s a lot to do. Honest readouts, real conversations, and a team that genuinely pushes each other. We also spent time looking ahead at what Fanatics Fest can become—and there’s a lot to be excited about. One of the best parts of these weeks is getting closer to the people we’re building this for. Whether it was time with partners, stops at the hobby shops, or conversations directly with fans, it was great to see the team leaning in and staying connected to what matters most. The marketing team even showed up to the Mets game and started surprising fans in jerseys with free photo and auto tickets on the spot—the reactions said everything. We’re not just building an event. Despite significant lockouts ('94-'95, '04-'05, and '12-13), the NHL hasn't faced those antitrust consequences, as the league and union have ultimately resolved their disputes within the labor framework. But it could in the future. Players of other sports' leagues have made that argument, and lockouts meet the criteria: the team employers (via the league) jointly impose terms after an impasse in bargaining, and then jointly refuse to deal with (hire) players except on those terms. But when players bring those cases, the leagues respond with the non-statutory labor exemption and courts often agree—as long as bargaining is ongoing. That's where the nuclear option comes in: the union disclaims representation of the players, which nixes the league's claim to the labor exemption, giving the players leverage through an antitrust claim. A breakdown in competition often leads to antitrust claims. In platform markets, so does a breakdown in cooperation. That's all for Antitrust & Hockey. Hope you enjoyed this series. One thing I’d add from the deal side: the financing gap isn’t just about a lack of capital. It’s about a mismatch between how risk is underwritten in traditional markets and how value is actually created inside sports ecosystems. Media rights durability, league governance, and scarcity dynamics don’t fit neatly into standard credit boxes, even though the cash flows are often more resilient than many “traditional” assets. We’re also seeing the conversation shift from single-asset solutions to platform thinking with credit structures that can flex across teams, leagues, real estate, data, and adjacent IP. That requires lenders who understand not just the balance sheet, but the politics, the stakeholders, and the long-term strategic objectives sitting behind these assets. Sports has always been institutionally relevant. What’s changing now is that the capital architecture is finally starting to catch up. 14 Profluence Sports 7K followers Why sports have become an institutional asset class... As the WNBA and WNBPA prepare to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement before the current deal expires in October 2025, this work outlines structural reforms that could unlock long-term growth for the league and its players. 🔍 The memo focuses on three (3) major areas for transformation: • Transitioning from a hard cap to a soft salary cap system • Modernizing contract structures to reflect player value and league stability • Removing outdated caps on marketing compensation Drawing from models in the NBA, NWSL, and emerging player-first ventures like Unrivaled, this framework proposes a modern path toward equitable revenue sharing and sustainable roster-building in women’s basketball. Valuation multiples stretch. Media rights deals reset the ceiling. Capital keeps flowing. Meanwhile, newsroom margins compress. The Washington Post folding its sports staff into a smaller features model lives inside that contradiction. (Quick sidebar. The steady shrinking and repositioning of newsrooms deserves a much larger conversation about the value of journalism in a country that has long defined itself by the freedom of the press. That debate is bigger than sports. But it sits behind this one) As a former sports reporter and freelancer for The Washington Post, this one lands differently. When a paper can eliminate its sports department, it's more than a staffing move - it's a signal about where sports attention has migrated. I remember (years ago...) filing stories on deadline, knowing it was one of the few ways people could relive the action. That scarcity gave the story weight. It does not in the same way now. By the time fans read that story now, they have watched, clipped, argued, and meme’d it in real time. What still matters is harder. Context. Taste. Accountability. The connective tissue between a game and the city, the money, the politics, the culture. The shift is clear. Sports coverage is moving from recap and access to meaning and interpretation. Distribution moved from the front page to the group chat. This has been building for years. Fans migrated to podcasts, newsletters, team owned channels, TikTok clips, and creator ecosystems. The Post decision simply makes visible what the market has been signaling. Teams and leagues will fill the volume. Trust is the scarce asset, and the next era belongs to whoever earns it and reinvents the ritual. #SportsBusiness #SportsMedia #CroppRingsTrue #SportsBiz 21 2 Comments LPLink 1K followers Avenue Capital Group has announced the final close of its Avenue Sports Fund, raising over $1 billion to invest in sports teams, leagues, and sports-related businesses across North America and Europe. Here's a brief breakdown and why this matters... The acquisition was led by Marc Spiegel, who is the founder and managing member of Atlanta-based investment firm Innovatio Capital. Querétaro FC is the first of four clubs expected to be sold to private equity firms in the league, the other three likely for more than what Querétaro was bought for. These four clubs have been on the block to eliminate a cross-ownership issue within Liga MX, where four groups have each maintained significant stakes in two rival teams simultaneously. This is against FIFA rules, which don't permit multiple teams with common ownership to participate in its interleague competitions. But it's also a motion to institute corporate governance, which global private equity firm Apollo is adamant about and in talks with the league on. Apollo's long-term involvement is unknown, but negotiations are supposedly taking place, per Forbes. Outside of this, Liga MX teams present an intriguing opportunity for many US-based investors for several reasons: ➊ Lower yet growing valuations with profitable teams ➋ It's the top sports league in a soccer-enthusiastic market ➌ Currently draws more viewers than the MLS Part of the appeal is also the potential for consolidating the media rights for the league. Media rights are obviously a significant revenue stream for some of the biggest sports leagues in the world. If Liga MX can pull this off, the upside is enormous 📈 Subscribe to the Vetted Sports weekly newsletter to get the latest industry news, trends, and updates 📩👇 www.vettedsports.com 96 1 Comment Startup Rise USA News 10K followers Working Capital Partners, a NYC-based provider of a structured capital platform for elite talent across sports, music and entertainment, has closed its Series A funding round led by WTSL—the investment firm founded by Patrick Whitesell and Jason Lublin.
