summary: "Jeffery Boakye Botah reports on a Humber SEBT Alumni event featuring Kevin Stelzer's presentation on retrofitting a 1989 campus building to EnerPHit and CAGBC Zero Carbon standards. The project achieved 97% heating energy reduction and actual EUI of 48 kWh/m², demonstrating that deep near net-zero retrofits are achievable in Ontario's climate."

# Humber SEBT Alumni Event 2026

Jeffery Boakye Botah, MSc., PG.Dip., PMP® 2d Report this post What a night with the Humber SEBT Alumni! It was a pleasure welcoming the Humber College Sustainable Energy and Building Technology (SEBT) alumni community to EPICS for an evening of excitement, networking and learning. Attendees walked through retrofit planning, saw digital twins in action, and even zoomed in on Google Earth to buildings that are being retrofitted right now. A highlight was Kevin Stelzer , Principal at ENFORM Architects Inc , presenting "Humber Passive House Nx – Advancing Retrofit Excellence". It was a deep dive into turning a 1989, 48,300 ft² campus building with thermal comfort problems into an EnerPHit and CAGBC Zero Carbon retrofit. Key takeaways: 🔹 Envelope first: 200 mm of exterior mineral wool, 100 mm of interior spray foam, Passive House–certified windows and thermal cladding clips gave about R43 effective walls. The team also removed chamfers, infilled the skylight and thermally isolated the canopy. 🔹 Airtightness is earned in stages: Testing ran from component to system to assembly to the whole building. The final result was 0.53 ACH50, against an EnerPHit target of 1.0. 🔹 A good envelope shrinks the mechanical plant: Heating equipment capacity dropped by roughly 75%, served by a VRF system and a PHI-certified DOAS, with a 25 kW rooftop PV array. 🔹 The building performs better than modelled: The model predicted EUI would fall from 216 to 64 kWh/m². The actual figure is 48 kWh/m², and heating energy is down about 97% (TEDI = 12.5 kWh/m²). 🔹 Comfort is the real win: Occupants are comfortable in both winter and summer, and daylighting improved with a lower glazing ratio. This is proof that deep, near net-zero retrofits are achievable in the Ontario climate. 🌱 Huge thanks to the Humber College SEBT Alumni community, Nick Brown C.E.M., C.M.V.P (organiser and presenter), Kirk Johnson (Program Director) and Kevin Stelzer for a memorable event. Thanks also to Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and BOMA Canada for their continuous support of sustainability and cleantech education. 🙌 It was great to see alumni reconnecting and sharing what they are working on today! 🎉 #HumberPolytechnic #SEBT #PassiveHouse #EnerPHit #DeepRetrofit #BuildingScience #NetZero #ZeroCarbon #DigitalTwin #SustainableBuildings #Decarbonization #Cleantech #BOMACanada #NRCan #ContinuousLearning #AlumniNetwork #Toronto +5 24 Like Comment Share Copy LinkedIn Facebook X To view or add a comment, sign in
