Somers Point's story begins in 1693, when English settler John Somers purchased land from the Lenape Native Americans and established the original Somers Plantation along the bay. He started the first ferry service across Great Egg Harbor Bay, connecting the mainland to Cape May. His son Richard Somers built the Somers Mansion between 1720 and 1726, a three-story Flemish-bond brick home overlooking the bay that is the oldest existing house in Atlantic County and a registered New Jersey State Historic Site. The mansion remained in the Somers family for more than 200 years before being deeded to the state in 1941. Somers Point became a borough in 1886 and was officially incorporated as a city in 1902. Today the city retains its colonial charm while offering all the conveniences of a modern community of just over 10,000 residents.
