## **Season One Kicks Off: The Room vs. The Market**

**The Scoreboard**
This is issue one, so the clock starts now: The Room vs. The Market, every week, all year long. The market already has points on the board, going 4-for-5 on this week’s calls, plus one legendary collapse we’ll enjoy at length below. You don’t have any points yet, because nothing you’ve called has resolved. So cast your votes on the three markets at the bottom, and starting next Sunday, we keep your tally. The goal for the whole year: beat the market. It can be done. Exhibit A: the collapse.

**The Calls**

🟢 HIT — Mexico to win the World Cup opener (market ~68% YES)
Mexico took care of South Africa 2-0 at the Azteca, and the market acted like it saw it all coming. What it didn’t see: three red cards, the most ever handed out in one World Cup match. Twelve years of anticipation, and the tournament’s first big story was a fight. The beautiful game, ladies and gentlemen.

🔴 MISS — Over 2.5 goals in that opener (market ~55% YES)
Three ejections, two goals. A full-on scuffle broke out at a soccer game, and the soccer itself was somehow the tame part. The market expected fireworks on the scoreboard; the fireworks went off somewhere else entirely.

🟢 HIT — South Korea to beat Czechia (market ~53% YES)
Korea fell behind, then remembered who they were and won 2-1. The market got it right. The Czechs are still trying to figure out what happened.

🟢 HIT — USA to win their World Cup opener (market ~60% YES)
The hosts hammered Paraguay 4-1 in front of a star-studded Hollywood crowd, their biggest World Cup win since 1930, back when the field had thirteen teams and the world was a different place. A country that figured out offside about three weeks ago looked, for one night, like it invented the game. The market backed them; it did not expect four goals.

🟢 HIT — Knicks to win Game 4 and take a 3-1 lead (market ~67% YES)
The market said New York would take care of it at home, and New York did. What the market didn’t say was how. (That’s coming up next. You may want to grab a chair.)

**Biggest Whiff of the Week 🔴**
The Knicks at ~2%.

Halfway through the fourth quarter of Game 4, the Spurs led by 29 after burying 14 threes in a single half, and the live market had New York at about two percent. Two! Then the Knicks pulled off the biggest comeback in NBA Finals history and won it on an OG Anunoby putback with 1.2 seconds on the clock. If you threw two bucks at a 2% Knicks ticket, congrats, you are now unbearable at every party you attend. The market is brilliant, right up until eighteen thousand fans start losing their minds.

**Best Call of the Week 🟢**
Inflation at 4.2%, called to the decimal.

May inflation landed at 4.2%, the highest in three years, and the crowd nailed it right on consensus. The one number guaranteed to sour your week, and the market forecast it like tomorrow’s weather. Gas did most of the damage, courtesy of an energy spike nobody wanted. Nobody’s celebrating, but somebody got it right.

**Now Open — go vote**
Three live markets on our radar. Choose a side and tell us why. Whatever you call gets scored next week:

- **Will the Fed hold rates on June 17?** The market is at 98.7% yes. That’s less a forecast and more a group chat everyone has muted. Is there a 1.3% wild card hiding somewhere? — yes or no, and why.
- **Will Bitcoin hit a new all-time high by year’s end?** The market gives it a mere 8%. After everything (the ETFs, the diehards, the guy at your gym who brings it up every single set), the crowd says there’s a 92% chance crypto’s record stays untouched. — yes or no, and why.
- **Will “nothing ever happen” in 2026?** There’s a real market, sitting at 71% yes, wagering that, broadly speaking, nothing ever happens. After a week of a three-red-card opener and a 29-point Finals comeback, the crowd is still 71% convinced everything’s fine. — yes or no, and why.

See you next Saturday. The market isn’t always right. As it turns out, neither is a 29-point lead.
