When I was at Bleacher Report , we acquired a fast-growing Instagram handle run by a college kid. It had about half a million followers. Not long after, my colleague C.J. Toledano dropped a casual comment on one of the posts: “Omar really did it this time.” The comments rolled in. “Who’s Omar?” “Where’s Omar?” Every post for months got flooded with the same question...Omar became a myth. And then one day, out of nowhere: “I’m Omar.” – @omarhoh Since then, Omar Raja has built a personal following of nearly 20 million. And the handle we acquired? That would be House of Highlights. It’s now sitting at 50 million on Instagram alone. The same playbook worked at Overtime . Tom Weingarten injects so much personality into the page, it barely feels like a company. Every caption sounds like a high schooler who snuck their phone out during 4th period to talk trash in the comments. From roasting fans to jumping into meme culture in real time, the voice is so locked in with the community that Overtime feels less like a media brand and more like the funniest kid in the gym. And when the sun goes down? The account flips into werewolf mode. Overtime After Dark becomes a whole different beast. Offbeat. Random. Unhinged. And somehow, still totally on-brand. People stay up just to see what might drop next. This kind of brand-personality mashup isn’t just limited to sports. Duolingo on TikTok is a masterclass. The green owl? Basically a chaotic Gen Z intern now. They chase clout, jump on trends, and poke fun at themselves—and in doing so, they’ve become appointment-viewing for a whole generation who otherwise might never open a language app. Ryanair - Europe's Favourite Airline is another one. It’s a budget airline, but you’d never guess from their content. They leaned all the way into sarcasm and meme culture. Their comments are sharp, self-aware, and way funnier than they should be. People with no plans to fly are following just for the jokes. The throughline? People don’t follow brands. They follow personalities. They follow vibes. And if you get it right, your brand doesn’t need to explain itself. It just is. The best brands don’t feel like brands. They feel like someone you already know. 139 12 Comments Copy LinkedIn Facebook X Tom Weingarten Tom Weingarten 1y Report this post Tom Weingarten shared this Happy Birthday OT! There’s so many people to thank in Atlanta who made the experience at Overtime special. The people who have poured into our athletes, advocated for them, collaborated across teams and across departments in a way that has made that building on 17th & Market St unique to the entire sports landscape. I didn't know going into my first week in September 2023 how it all would together. But when you got on the practice floor, you walked through production or content, you saw how the E-Unit brought things to life on the Showcourt, you saw the impact that the academic staff made (and changed the way prep schools approached the academic model) - you just knew you were somewhere special. And others felt the impact made as well. You can do special things when you have special people working collectively towards something and I wanted to take the time this evening to acknowledge that and give those their flowers. All love. The audience took their attention and their trust somewhere else. To creators they chose themselves, on platforms they control. And that trust doesn't ride along with a national TV spot. It never could. Here's why we can do something about that when almost nobody can. Overtime is the creator, the league, and the platform at the same time. We have the Gen-Z audience, the game broadcasts they show up for, and the pipes to put a sponsor in front of them. A network has the reach but little pull with young people. A creator has the voice but no game to wrap it around. We have all of it under one roof, which is the only way a live, authentic ad actually works. That's Heat Check. The clip below is Wendy's, done by Overtime creators in their own voice, live, on YouTube and TikTok. And to be clear about where I think this goes: it's early. Early innings for YouTube, for live games moving onto the internet, for ad formats that look nothing like a 30-second TV slot. I'm not telling you TV is over. I'm telling you this is a lot closer to where it's all heading. Reach is the easy part. Anyone can buy it. What you can't buy in the $20B+ live sports ad market is a creator the under-35 crowd trusts, reacting to your brand in real time, in front of an audience that chose to be there. That's the part nobody else owns. Here is what owning a commercial break can look like in the future. public_profile__reactions 13 Copy LinkedIn Facebook X Tom Weingarten liked this Report this post Tom Weingarten liked this Marc Kohn Marc Kohn 1d Tom Weingarten liked this Plenty of great marketers still buy TV. Let's Go 1-2-3 • 3K followers I’ve been fortunate to build meaningful relationships across professional basketball — and recently had the opportunity to prepare a strategic memo for several WNBA agents on modernizing player compensation. As the WNBA and WNBPA prepare to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement before the current deal expires in October 2025, this work outlines structural reforms that could unlock long-term growth for the league and its players. 🔍 The memo focuses on three (3) major areas for transformation: • Transitioning from a hard cap to a soft salary cap system • Modernizing contract structures to reflect player value and league stability • Removing outdated caps on marketing compensation Drawing from models in the NBA, NWSL, and emerging player-first ventures like Unrivaled, this framework proposes a modern path toward equitable revenue sharing and sustainable roster-building in women’s basketball. Every team, broadcaster, and athlete should be figuring out how to create and experiment in this area. But the story doesn’t have to end with higher costs, fewer opportunities, and a shrinking field of play. ➡️At the No Backboard Basketball League( NBBL), we’re building a different playbook: ✅️Lowering barriers: One UHoop can turn any space into a training ground and content factory. Families don’t need to chase expensive travel circuits to give their kids a chance with our network of training gyms connected via Blockchain. ✅️Expanding NIL beyond stars: Our royalty pool and content-first model reward all athletes who participate and create — not just the early-blooming elites. ✅️Protecting athletes & families: NIL education, smart contracts, and transparent revenue sharing put power back in the hands of players, not middlemen. ✅️Keeping the joy in the game: Basketball-the-Remix blends training, scrimmage, music, fashion, and media so athletes grow on the court and in their own culture. ⛔️The NBBL exists because we saw what’s coming — and we refuse to let the next generation of American hoopers be locked out. This isn’t just about NIL; it’s about ownership, creativity, and community. 📖We’re rewriting the playbook too! They’re tournaments. Every weekend, thousands of teams travel across the country for exposure events run by tournament operators. Why? Because tournaments control: • visibility • competition level • recruiting access • brand partnerships Look at companies like MADE Hoops. They didn’t build a team. They built a platform hosting tournaments, creating media coverage, and bringing together top prospects from across the country. Now players and programs travel to their events to compete and be seen. In many ways, tournament organizers control the stage. And in sports, the stage often holds more power than the performers. Players perform. Teams compete. But tournaments create the environment everyone wants access to. Which raises an interesting business question: What if more people thought about building the platform, not just the team? Some creative ways people are starting to enter the tournament space: • niche tournaments (shooting showcases, position camps, analytics combines) • regional exposure events in overlooked markets • media-driven tournaments with livestream + content creators • brand-sponsored community tournaments Youth basketball is massive. And the infrastructure around it is still evolving. Question: What tournament had the biggest impact on your basketball journey? And why? #sportsbusiness #sports #athlete #basketball 9 1 Comment Michael Molter Top Rank Marketing • 659 followers 8 years ago, the Supreme Court voted to repeal a 1992 law that changed the US sports betting scene. That would be 5x what ESPN currently pays, and a big shift in how F1 reaches American fans. F1 has long relied on traditional broadcasters to build audience familiarity. But the sport’s growth in the US – turbocharged by Drive to Survive, Vegas, and booming Gen Z interest – means the next phase of growth is about ownership, innovation, and deeper digital integration. And that’s where Apple shines. Apple aren't just buying the rights. They’re building a sports empire – adding F1 to a portfolio that already includes MLS (via the Season Pass), Friday Night Baseball, Sunday Night Soccer and bits of European football. But unlike most streamers, Apple plays the long game. They design the product, own the platform, and shape the storytelling. And with their seamless ecosystem (from iPhones to Apple TV), they have the ability to turn races into full digital experiences, not just broadcasts. Of course, this raises questions about whether exclusive streaming will limit casual access, and how this impacts media value globally. But one thing’s clear: If the deal goes through, F1 won’t just be streamed. It will be packaged, curated, and engineered for the Apple generation. In a world where sports rights are no longer just about airtime, this has the potential to be F1’s most powerful US play yet. #F1 #MediaRights #SportsBusiness #SportsMedia 43 5 Comments John D’Acquisto D. In 2024, WNBA teams generated $76M across 551 deals. NWSL teams weren’t far behind, pulling in $75M from 445 partnerships. That’s an average deal size of $138K–$169K. High volume. Real value. Rapid momentum. Women’s sports sponsorships continue to soar, with a 12% rise in 2024-25 following years of double-digit growth. Athlete endorsements are also surging, with WNBA stars leading the way, signaling an accelerated shift in brand investment across women’s sports. For brands still sitting on the sidelines: this is your sign. Women's sports isn’t a cause. It’s a business case. "It is impressive to see sports betting contribute $172 million to New Hampshire public education. The success of the partnership with DraftKings since inception is undeniable in terms of consistent growth. However, from an industry perspective, exclusivity rarely translates to optimal revenue in the long run. While a single-operator model simplifies administration, a competitive, multi-operator environment typically drives higher 'GGR' (Gross Gaming Revenue) through sharper pricing, increased innovation, and wider market reach. As the industry matures, it will be interesting to see if New Hampshire eventually considers opening the market to further maximize these vital education funds. Responsible growth is a win, but true market competition is usually the knockout blow for maximizing public returns." 8 1 Comment Corey Leff JohnWallStreet • 8K followers Elite high school sports “is going to be one of the more valuable media rights [categories] and nationally monetized [broadcast] products in the next 10-20 years,” Michael Schreiber (founder and executive chairman, Playfly Sports) said. NWSL viewers per game: 189,000. WNBA viewers per game: 794,000. And yet guess which league has the biggest media deal? (Hint: it’s MLS.) The NWSL is outpacing the MLS in average viewership — in a season without some of its biggest stars. But the MLS still makes nearly $200 million more per year on its media rights. And here's the thing: If these deals were being re-negotiated today, I’d still bet the MLS walks away with more money per viewer. The question is: why? In this week’s edition of The Playbook, I break down the hidden double standard that still drives the way we value men’s vs women’s sports. I talk about the importance of investment (vs. equal pay), what growing franchise valuations actually mean in women’s sports, and why I think the growth we’re seeing is just the beginning — rather than the end — of a sea change in mindset among investors and stakeholders. Key Findings ▪️ Players from Arizona State University, University of New Orleans, and Mississippi Valley State University were found to have either manipulated their performances or provided insider information to enable betting ▪️ Violations ranged from influencing point spreads to coordinating with third parties on prop bets ▪️ Some cases were uncovered through fellow student-athletes reporting suspicious behavior The Bigger Picture: This comes amid heightened scrutiny of sports betting across all levels. Last month alone saw nearly three dozen arrests in gambling-related activities, including an NBA player and coach. For Athletic Departments: The use of integrity monitoring services and anonymous reporting channels proved critical in these investigations. As sports betting becomes more prevalent, robust compliance programs and education for student-athletes are no longer optional—they're essential. The intersection of legalized sports betting and college athletics continues to present significant integrity challenges for institutions nationwide. #CollegeBasketball #NCAA #SportsIntegrity #ComplianceMatters #AthleticAdministration https://lnkd.in/g9CFRp6g 3 Martin Pounds LiveWrire Sports and… • 19 followers WNBA CBA Just Got Bigger: New Details Reveal $10M Salary Cap Future and Massive League Shift Screenshot The WNBA’s new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) is already being called transformational — but the latest details suggest it may be even bigger than initially reported. Genius will serve as the exclusive distributor of official Pac-12 data to sportsbooks worldwide, while also supporting integrity, AI-driven insights, fan engagement, and performance analytics. My take: Data is moving to the center of the model. Every game produces a stream of information that can be packaged, licensed, and monetized across multiple channels. Sportsbooks depend on it. Media platforms build on it. Teams and coaches use it to improve performance. Control the data, and you control the ecosystem around it. The exclusive distribution piece is key. It creates scarcity and standardization at the same time. Licensed operators get trusted, real-time feeds. The conference gets a structured revenue stream tied directly to on-field activity. AI builds on top of that foundation. From integrity monitoring to advanced analytics and fan-facing products, the same dataset powers multiple layers of value creation. Bigger picture: College conferences are expanding beyond media rights into data rights. That shift opens new revenue streams without adding games or changing formats. Genius Sports is positioning itself as the infrastructure provider behind that transition. And deals like this show how quickly that layer is becoming core to the business of college sports. #SportsBusiness #SportsTech #CollegeSports #Data #SportsBetting 46 1 Comment Show more posts Show fewer posts Explore top content on LinkedIn Find curated posts and insights for relevant topics all in one place.
