summary: "Luke Pierce advises against quick $1,000 45-minute business audits, arguing they're too superficial for meaningful system building. Instead, he recommends a comprehensive 2-week audit process involving stakeholder interviews, workflow mapping, cost quantification, and deliverable architecture to provide real value."

# Luke Pierce on Auditing Small Businesses

Luke Pierce @lukepierceops I keep getting DMs asking if they should run one of these $1,000 45-minute audits. I tell them no every single time and to do this instead. If you can audit a business in 45 minutes, it's too small to afford anything you'd build for it anyway. And any business actually worth building systems for is way messier than 45 minutes can hold. Close to 100% of the time, quite frankly. I've been building AI automation systems for companies for 4 years. Here's what I tell them to do instead: First, map out every stakeholder you need to talk to. Founder, head of ops, sales lead, whoever runs fulfillment, the admin buried in data entry. Every role that touches the workflows you're auditing. Then run calls with each of them across the first week. 60 to 90 minutes each. This is where the real bottlenecks come out. The founder almost never knows where they are. The people doing the work every day do. Once the calls are done, map every workflow end to end. Intake, fulfillment, sales, ops, reporting. Every handoff, every approval, every place data gets re-entered by hand. Then async follow-ups to close the gaps. Loom walkthroughs of their actual tools. Screenshots of the spreadsheets ops is running on. From there, quantify the pain and cost. Hours per week, dollars per month, throughput lost. Real numbers. Then architect the fix. Data layer, workflows, AI agents, integrations. Every opportunity ranked by ROI. Finally, package the deliverable. Process maps, architecture diagrams, a phased build plan, ROI math, timelines. Then a 60-90-minute walkthrough to present it. That's 2 weeks of work minimum and 5 to 10 calls. The client walks away with a deliverable they can hand to any developer, whether they build with you or not. A 45-minute "audit" is a sales call, important to not confuse the two. 12:23 PM · Jun 16, 2026 6K Views :host{display:inline-block;direction:ltr;white-space:nowrap;line-height:1}span{display:inline-block}:host([data-will-change]) span{will-change:transform}.number,.digit{padding:round(nearest, calc(var(--number-flow-mask-height, 0.25em) / 2), 1px) 0}.symbol{white-space:pre} 6 :where(number-flow-react){line-height:1}number-flow-react > span{font-kerning:none;display:inline-block;padding:calc(round(nearest, calc(var(--number-flow-mask-height, 0.25em) / 2), 1px) * 2) 0} 6 :host{display:inline-block;direction:ltr;white-space:nowrap;line-height:1}span{display:inline-block}:host([data-will-change]) span{will-change:transform}.number,.digit{padding:round(nearest, calc(var(--number-flow-mask-height, 0.25em) / 2), 1px) 0}.symbol{white-space:pre} 9 :where(number-flow-react){line-height:1}number-flow-react > span{font-kerning:none;display:inline-block;padding:calc(round(nearest, calc(var(--number-flow-mask-height, 0.25em) / 2), 1px) * 2) 0} 9 :host{display:inline-block;direction:ltr;white-space:nowrap;line-height:1}span{display:inline-block}:host([data-will-change]) span{will-change:transform}.number,.digit{padding:round(nearest, calc(var(--number-flow-mask-height, 0.25em) / 2), 1px) 0}.symbol{white-space:pre} 7 5 :where(number-flow-react){line-height:1}number-flow-react > span{font-kerning:none;display:inline-block;padding:calc(round(nearest, calc(var(--number-flow-mask-height, 0.25em) / 2), 1px) * 2) 0} 75 :host{display:inline-block;direction:ltr;white-space:nowrap;line-height:1}span{display:inline-block}:host([data-will-change]) span{will-change:transform}.number,.digit{padding:round(nearest, calc(var(--number-flow-mask-height, 0.25em) / 2), 1px) 0}.symbol{white-space:pre} 1 3 4 :where(number-flow-react){line-height:1}number-flow-react > span{font-kerning:none;display:inline-block;padding:calc(round(nearest, calc(var(--number-flow-mask-height, 0.25em) / 2), 1px) * 2) 0} 134 Read 6 replies
