# Her Direct Report Just Asked About Q3

Carly Vivian 1mo Report this post Her direct report just asked her about Q3. She has nine days to decide if she will be there for it. In the meantime, She has to keep her camera on. She has to keep showing up to her standup. She has to keep running her team like nothing is happening. She has to keep being asked for input on the Q3 roadmap she may not be there for. She has to keep being copied on threads about decisions she may not be there to see executed. She has to keep being the person her direct reports come to when they are anxious about their own positions, knowing she can't tell them what she knows about her own. That is the part nobody is writing about. The Microsoft voluntary retirement program is the version of this story in the headlines right now. Roughly 8,750 employees got an offer on May 7. They have until June 8 to decide. To receive the package, they have to remain in good standing through July 2. Which means they are making one of the most consequential decisions of their careers while still performing the roles they may be leaving. But Microsoft is not the only company running a program like this. Every quiet timeline-compression event happening across tech, consulting, finance, and media right now has a version of the same clause. The senior woman absorbs the load while the company decides what it wants from her. I have been watching senior women carry this kind of thing for many years. The ability to look composed in a 9 AM meeting while a different version of your future is sitting open in a tab you just closed before you joined the call. That is not a small ask. It is the weight of holding two opposing realities in the same calendar week, and the weight has no name in the official paperwork. If you are her this week, the question that matters most is not in your spreadsheet. It is the one you have not let yourself sit with yet because you have been too busy performing normal. That quiet calculation is the only thing that will still matter on July 3. ♻️ Repost this if someone you know needs to read it.
