summary: "SP1 Primer Application is the critical adhesion foundation for FM ELEVATION membrane assembly, requiring proper substrate preparation, temperature control, and coverage rates to prevent bubbles and edge lifts. The process includes pre-application verification, roller or brush application at specified rates, flash-off monitoring, and comprehensive documentation with a sign-off checklist."

# Step 2: SP1 Primer Application

Step 2: SP1 Primer Application
Overview
SP1 Primer is the adhesion foundation for the entire FM ELEVATION assembly. Correct application
ensures the S60 membrane bonds fully and uniformly. Poor primer coverage is the leading cause of
membrane bubbles and edge lifts.
Pre-Application Checklist
[ ] Substrate passed Step 1 sign-off
[ ] Ambient temperature: 40F minimum, 100F maximum
[ ] Surface temperature: Same range. Do not apply on a surface that is hotter than the ambient air
(thermal off-gassing will cause bubbles)
[ ] No rain forecast within 4 hours
[ ] Surface is dry to the touch. No dew, frost, or standing water
Application Method
1. Stir SP1 thoroughly before use. Do not thin.
2. Apply by roller (3/8 in. nap) or brush. Spray application requires manufacturer approval.
3. Coverage rate: Apply at the rate specified on the SP1 TDS (typically 200-300 sq ft per gallon on
concrete; less on porous or rough surfaces). Do not over-apply. Thick primer films pool and create a
weak bond layer.
4. Work in manageable sections. Keep a wet edge.
5. Apply primer up all vertical transitions and curbs to the height the membrane will terminate.
Flash-Off
Allow SP1 to reach tack-free state before applying membrane. This is typically 30-60 minutes at 70F
and low humidity.
Test: Touch lightly with a clean finger. Primer should feel tacky but not transfer to your finger.
Do not apply membrane over wet primer. Do not let primer fully cure to a hard film (maximum
open time per TDS).

Common Mistakes
Applying over damp or dirty substrate
Applying below 40F (primer will not cure properly)
Rolling too fast and leaving skip marks (thin spots)
Not priming up the vertical curb faces
