Residents and Visitors New Georgia residents must register in person within 30 days of establishing residence. Visitors who remain in the state for less than 90 days, and out-of-state students are not required to register their vehicles in Georgia as long as they display a valid license plate from their home state, unless they: Accept employment in the state Engage in any trade, profession, or occupation in the state Enter their children in Georgia public schools. In these cases, they must purchase a Georgia tag and/or decal within 30 days after entering Georgia. Liability Insurance Georgia requires liability insurance to register a vehicle. Insurance must be electronically transmitted to the Georgia Insurance Database prior to registration. You must also have a Georgia Drivers License prior to registration. Specialty Plates In addition to the standard license plate, Georgia offers a wide variety of Specialty License Plates. You may visit the State of Georgia website to view the available license plates and the specialty plate requirements. Georgia Drives Georgia drivers may complete a variety of services online through  Georgia Drives e-Services .
