St. Marys has about 18,000 people, and Camden County has a population of about 51,000 people. Just north of Camden County is Glynn County, with about 80,000 people, with the main city of Brunswick (16,000 in the city, about 52,000 in the area). South of Camden County are Nassau County (about 73,000) and Duval County, Florida and the large city of Jacksonville (about 837,000 people). Other nearby small communities include Kingsland (13,000), and Woodbine (9,000), both in Georgia, and Yulee (about 12,000), Florida. It is just less than 3 miles from downtown St. Marys to NSB Kings Bay; this takes about 9 minutes to commute, but St. Marys is small and very nearby, and travel times from other housing can vary significantly. The average commute in Camden County is about 22 minutes. Brunswick is about 45 minutes north, and Jacksonville about 40 minutes south. Kingsland, Woodbine, and Yulee are all within a half-hour commute. Short Description of the Area : The St. Marys and Camden County area is the southernmost coastal area of Georgia, just north of Florida and just south of Georgia's Golden Isles. This is a one of the oldest settled areas of the south, originally a French settlement, later a Spanish settlement, before the British assumed control of this section of coast. Later, one of the American battles of the War of Jenkin's Ear was fought in Camden, the Battle of Bloody Marsh, between British and Spanish troops. During the American Revolutionary War, Camden County was a minor theater and base for Loyalists. In the American Civil War the coastal areas were shelled and raided by Union forces, and after the end of the Civil War became a stronghold of Democrats. During World War II, St. Marys and Camden, along with Glynn County, to the north, were the site of anti-submarine patrols. Climate and Weather : The area has a warm, humid climate, winter temperatures of the mid 60s to low 40s and summer temperatures in the range of the low 90s to low 70s. The area has occasional tropical storms and may be in the path of a hurricane, but no notable hurricanes have hit Georgia since 1898. Summers are hot and humid, with most of the year's rainfall. Winters are mild and drier than summer.
