She is the daughter of a former cheerleader and a musician/engineer. She began her career as a child actress on the TV series Barney & Friends. Her breakout role came in 2008 as Mitchie Torres in the Disney Channel movie Camp Rock, which launched her into music stardom with her debut album, Don't Forget. Throughout her career, Lovato has been remarkably open about her personal struggles, including battles with mental health issues, such as her diagnosis of bipolar disorder, bulimia, and self-harm, beginning in her youth. These challenges have been addressed in several documentaries, including Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated and Dancing with the Devil. Lovato is a prominent philanthropist and activist, leveraging her platform to champion several causes, most notably mental health awareness and anti-bullying efforts.
