## **Wedding Bells Ring, Giants Fall**

**The Scoreboard**
Three hits out of five, and the most reliable thing on the board this week came with a veil. The market got the year’s least surprising event right, Taylor Swift actually marrying Travis Kelce, then watched the Round of 32 bury favorite after favorite: two European heavyweights knocked out on penalties, plus a jobs report that came in more than 50,000 short of consensus. When a celebrity wedding is your most dependable position, it’s been that kind of week.

**The Calls**

🔴 MISS — Netherlands to get past Morocco (market ~72% YES)
A 1-1 draw, then a 3-2 loss in the shootout. Morocco keeps showing that 2022 wasn’t a one-off, and the market keeps pricing them like it was. One of the tournament’s usual suspects is gone in the very first knockout round, and the orange chunk of everyone’s bracket has been reduced to a stain.

🟢 HIT — USA to beat Bosnia (market ~65% YES)
The hosts won 2-0 and punched their ticket to the Round of 16. Folarin Balogun scored and then got sent off, a red card so questionable that the player he fouled stepped up to defend him. The market saw it coming, and American soccer bettors got to enjoy the unfamiliar feeling of being correct.

🟢 HIT — Argentina to survive Cape Verde (market ~93% YES)
Correct, though “survive” is doing an awful lot of work there. Last week’s favorite island underdogs dragged the world champions into extra time, leveled the score twice, and only lost 3-2 thanks to a late own goal. The market’s “Cape Verde has no chance” call held up on paper and fell apart everywhere else. Messi moves on; the neutrals are heartbroken.

🟢 HIT — Taylor Swift to get married in 2026 (market ~95% YES)
Ten years of breakup albums later, Taylor Swift married Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden on Friday, with Adam Sandler (yes, the Adam Sandler) running the ceremony. The market had it at 95%, and traders still threw more than $4.5 million at Swift-Kelce bets, including a venue market so locked in it paid out 84 cents on the dollar. Even when the bet is “two people in love tie the knot,” the house finds a way to get paid. Congratulations to the happy couple, and to everyone who took the chalk.

🔴 MISS — June payrolls to top 100,000 (market ~63% YES)
The economy limped to 57,000 new jobs against a consensus near 115,000, and somehow unemployment dropped to 4.2%, because roughly half a million people just quit looking. That’s not a comeback; that’s a vibe. The market was betting on a solid number and got a shrug instead.

**Biggest Whiff of the Week 🔴**
Germany at ~80%.

Four World Cup titles on the crest. A 1-1 draw with Paraguay, a 4-3 shootout loss, and an early flight home from the Round of 32. The market bought the name on the jersey, like it always does, but that name has now flopped at three World Cups in a row. And Germany didn’t just lose, they lost on penalties, the one format where a hundred years of history buys you absolutely nothing. Somewhere, a spreadsheet is quietly rewriting “Germany are elite” as “Germany were elite.”

**Best Call of the Week 🟢**
The Pharaohs, finally.

Egypt had never won a single knockout match at a World Cup. Not one. The market treated that stat like gravity. Then came Australia, a draw, a shootout, and Mohamed Salah ambling up to the spot and rolling it dead center like he was dropping coins at a tollbooth. Egypt advanced 4-2 on penalties, decades of history overturned by a guy who didn’t even bother picking a corner. If you believed the drought would end, you’re holding the best ticket of the round.

**Now Open — go vote**
The Round of 16 starts today, and the bracket barely looks like itself anymore. Three to call:

- **Will the USA reach the quarterfinals?** Still the hot one from last week. They got past Bosnia and now face Belgium, who just clawed back from two goals down against Senegal. Home fans, bigger stakes, harder opponent. Market sits around 35%. — yes or no, and why.
- **Will the Fed hike rates before year’s end?** Update: that rough jobs report took the air out of the whole hike debate. Two weeks ago they were hinting at a raise; now a 57k print has the market sliding back toward “forget we said anything,” down to around 40%. Where does it land? — yes or no, and why.
- **Will anyone top 70 hot dogs at Nathan’s today?** It’s the Fourth, so grown adults will be shoveling frankfurters for glory. The record is a frankly concerning 76 in ten minutes, and the line is set near 70.5. Can anyone’s stomach get there again? — yes or no, and why.

Catch you next week. The heavyweights are falling fast: Germany, the Dutch, and every favorite who didn’t notice the tournament had started. At least the wedding went off without a hitch. Happy Fourth.
