Carly Vivian 3mo Report this post I was forty-two, briefing a Fortune 50 board, and the CEO cut me off mid-sentence. “𝘞𝘩𝘰 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘦𝘳?” My executive sponsor didn’t say a word. So I answered. “𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘪𝘥. 𝘚𝘪𝘹 𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘬𝘴 𝘢𝘨𝘰. 𝘉𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳.” I finished the presentation. The strategy shifted that quarter. For a long time, I told that story as the day I got lucky. The day the right words showed up. The day I finally found my footing. It wasn’t any of those things. What happened in that room was ten years of work that nobody had ever seen. Ten years of watching how boards actually decide. Ten years of learning which consultants are heard and which got ignored. Ten years of understanding, very specifically, what it takes to hold a line when a room is testing whether you can. I had a recipe by then. I just hadn’t stopped to read it. The women I sit across from now, those at the decision point between a First Act and whatever comes next, almost all have a moment like that one. A room they shouldn’t have survived. A decision they made faster than they should have been able to. A promotion that came from somewhere they couldn’t quite name. They file it under 𝘨𝘰𝘵 𝘭𝘶𝘤𝘬𝘺. Or 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘺 𝘷𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦. Or 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘥. But it’s almost never any of those. It’s a recipe. Built over a decade of specific work, specific pattern recognition, specific muscle built. And it’s decodable, portable, and can travel with them. It’s theirs. The women who navigate the Second Act well are the ones who stopped to read their recipe before they needed to. The ones who didn’t, end up spending their Second Act trying to reverse-engineer something they already had. That's exactly what it takes. The strength. The fortitude. The diplomatic way of saying I've had enough, without actually saying I've had enough. This level of fortitude is needed more now than ever before. Particularly during this time when women, especially black women, are being forced out of jobs that they have more than earned.
