As preparations begin, genius setter Tobio Kageyama is invited to the All-Japan Youth Training Camp to play alongside fellow nationally recognized players. Meanwhile, Kei Tsukishima is invited to a special rookie training camp for first-years within the Miyagi Prefecture. Not receiving any invitations himself, the enthusiastic Shouyou Hinata feels left behind. However, Hinata does not back down. Transforming his frustration into self-motivation, he boldly decides to sneak himself into the same rookie training camp as Tsukishima. Even though Hinata only lands himself a job as the ball boy, he comes to see this as a golden opportunity. He begins to not only reflect on his skills as a volleyball player but also analyze the plethora of information available on the court and how he can apply it. I began watching it maybe last year, maybe this year... honestly, who even knows anymore 😃 With all the other anime and series I was juggling, I just couldn’t get around to finishing it. But now I’m UNFORTUNATELY done, and it makes me want to cry all over again xdd. This anime took me through every possible emotion. I enjoyed every single match with them, cheering like a maniac, screaming at the screen, crying at the emotional moments, swearing when things went wrong, and yes… even smacking myself ... in the head when they made a stupid mistake. The emotional damage was real. As a sports anime, it hits differently, especially if you actually like volleyball. The energy, the teamwork, the tension, the growth, it all feels so real and so inspiring. I loved watching their journey, their victories, their failures, and the way they kept pushing forward no matter what. And the ending… yeah, let’s not talk about that. I hated it too, eh XD But at the same time, it made me even more excited for the sequel. I’m absolutely looking forward to what comes next. For me, Haikyuu!! is a truly beautiful anime full of lessons, motivation, and unforgettable moments. In theory, it's obvious that the objective is to serve as a mini training arc before the series climax of the national championship. In practice you end up with a season which feels unconfident and unsure of itself, choosing to take half measures in all aspects rather than fully committing to any one idea. The first half of this season takes place in two, technically three, different training camps. One which follows Kageyami, one which follows Hinata (and technically Tsukishima), ... and one which follows everyone else. This could've been a great opportunity to focus on elevating each character's individual skills and building up their soon to be opponents at the tournament, but instead it ends up feeling very half baked. Almost the entirety of this section is taken up by Hinata learning how to take in the full range of information provided by the court, and while this is ultimately a good decision for his particular style I do think it's a major missed opportunity. This kind of training could've served a dual purpose of granting the viewer a more aerial view of the playing field and yet it's almost entirely internalized by Hinata without giving much away to the viewer. While he does have a few moments where he demonstrates high potential as someone who's more capable of utilizing information to supplement his already high natural ability, it still ends up feeling under utilized by the show. Especially so as the show barely spends any time developing Tsuki or Kageyami, the ones who were actually invited to go to the camps in the first place. It's such an odd decision to explicitly highlight that they were chosen as players with high potential and simply not show them growing as players during these camps. Tsuki especially ends up further into the background than he ever has, which is a waste not only as a player but as one of the more entertaining characters in the show as well. Despite Kageyama being sent to train with the best players in Japan, we're only shown brief glimpses of his time there. He has one or two interactions with the more abrasive players and almost no training is shown at all. This was a prime opportunity to offer a sneak peek at what the upcoming tournament has to offer by demonstrating just how good these players are and they completely squandered it. While more of a balance would obviously be best, if they were going to spend an overwhelming amount of time on one character I would've preferred it to be Kageyama. Instead his camp is perpetually hung in front of your face, almost mocking the viewer for expecting to see something cool. It's not as though this is made up for with significant character development either. The entire cast ends up almost regressing a little in terms of personality in order to add a slight amount of forced drama into the character interactions, inevitably leading them back to square one rather than moving forward. The team had already faced all of their trials and tribulations in the first three seasons, so it seems like they've simply hit a wall in terms of how they can keep them moving "forward" in terms of development. In this case, I don't think the characters actually need to be developed all that much anymore, and it would've been better to use the training camps as a springboard to push the team forward instead. This somewhat ends up happening, but it's executed so awkwardly, as if the show thinks it needs the drama to make these progressions happen, rather than trusting the characters to execute properly on their own. Off the court their attempts aren't much better. There are two major attempts at giving lesser characters their time in the spotlight, one with Kiyoko and one with Tanaka, neither of which are done well at all. For Kiyoko she gets a quarter episode worth of screen time, prompted by one of the most ridiculous set ups in the entire show, where she monologues about her past and how she's a part of the team too for no real reason. This moment feels extremely out of place, it doesn't feel natural, it doesn't fit her character up to this point, and is never addressed again. This could've been saved for an interaction with another team member or gradually built up to, but instead it's sprung onto you all at once in this very awkward way, destined to fall flat. Tanaka falls into a similar boat, his subplot feels equally forced in at the end of the season simply to fill time rather than for any real purpose. They dedicate nearly an entire episode to it but even with all this time it still feels half committed, it all feels so rushed and hastily thrown together rather than a natural part of his character arc. This half committed attitude permeates throughout the entirety of Season 4 and is the reason why it fails in comparison to its predecessors. The strange part is that they had the prefect setup for success. Splitting the season into two cours and starting the first half with two separate training camps means that they had ample time to use this first half as pure set up and allocate all of the action to the second half. If they stretched out the training camps to fill up the entire cour than they would give them a lot more time to flesh out not just Hinata, but every other member of the team as well. We'd have more time to actually learn about the other competitors at Kageyami's camp, the people who're the greatest threat at the series climax, as well as granting more insight into how other coaches, and other players, end up training. It could've been a great opportunity to foster team-wide growth rather than honing in completely on Hinata and filling the remaining time with forced petty drama. However, I'm completely unable to sit through more than a handful of episodes, and I honestly think I got through 2 and had to stop. They changed the animation and the character design and I'm no longer invested in these "new looking" characters. Asahi, for example, I wish I could explain what exactly happened there. His hairline was, for some reason, redone in a way that makes him look completely separate from the character we saw in the first 3 seasons. This new one ... could be an older brother or an uncle. It may align more with what is the original art in the manga but since I haven't read it, I'm not so sure. Perhaps I am biased as he is my favorite character but, the other characters seemed to lose part of their appearance as well. Most of the aesthetic appeal of the first 3 seasons is lost on this one which I found disappointing. Art style is so important for these sorts of shows and I'm upset that it was changed. Again, I'm not sure if the intent was to align more with the manga's artwork which I know some shows do as the seasons progress; but, Haikyuu!! was always an immersive visual experience and it no longer feels that way. The depth of the characters also feels wrong. They are all slowly losing their individuality and losing their spark as individuals on a team or who are training to improve. Overall, there does come a time where a story has to end and I do think that Haikyuu!! definitely has a few more seasons worth of storytelling and advancement to showcase. This new art style and new animation is going to unfortunately pull audiences away. I would have loved to see the original art style and animation continued throughout the end of the story so that I could see the resolution, even though I know how it all concludes, but, it's not the same characters honestly. The appearance is different. The personalities are different. If none of that is a bother, then please take a watch. But, if those sort of changes bug you, then steer clear and allow season 3 to be the "end" of Haikyuu!! for you. Reviewer’s Rating: 3 What did you think of this review?
