SVM scientists hold international leadership in much of the research they conduct, yielding critical discoveries in areas as diverse as influenza, oncology, and demyelinating diseases. Their findings are incorporated into curriculum, clinical practice, and industry partnerships. Research at the SVM covers a broad range of topics including strategies to improve milk production and cow comfort, determining causal factors for ruptured cruciate ligaments in dogs, and detecting and preventing West Nile virus infection. DVM Student Research There are many opportunities for DVM students to gain research experience, including hourly lab positions, summer fellowships and more. Graduate Research Training The school's Comparative Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program provides exceptional training in core areas of animal and human health. Faculty Research & Funding Explore extramural funding options and opportunities for faculty to highlight their latest research findings. FIND FUNDING The UW School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) has several mechanisms to assist individuals in obtaining research funding. The school has a diverse research portfolio from both federal and non-federal sponsors, training grants, and fellowships. Several fellowships exist for PhD students conducting research in SVM laboratories. Current and prospective students can apply for federal, non-federal, and campus funds, as well as travel funds to support presenting their research. Veterinary medical students can apply for support to pursue research for 12 weeks during the summer at the University of Wisconsin-Madison or other institutions through the Summer Scholars Program.
