# Pigeons: Memory and Inheritance in Iranian Culture

Growing up in the West, I always heard that pigeons were dirty, useless, annoying birds.
But every time I went back to Iran, I saw something completely different.
And when i think about the history, “Pigeon voyageurs” were used to deliver letters because they could always find their way home. They were messengers. Trusted. Valued.

My grandfather used to keep pigeons and tell me stories on how pigeons always return, how they remember their home, how you must learn to care for them with patience and respect.

This goes far back. In cities like Isfahan and Yazd, there were entire structures called kabutar khaneh (pigeon towers), beautiful, circular buildings made just for pigeons. Not as pets, but as part of life and land. Their droppings were used to fertilize soil. The design protected pigeons from predators while allowing them to return freely.

Later, in neighborhoods across Tehran and other cities, rooftops pigeons became a working-class tradition where pigeons were kept and trained to fly in groups and come home ( kabutarbazi )

Now I watch my mother by the window, feeding them softly.And I understand: this is not a habit.
This is inheritance.
Across Iran and Afghanistan cultural, pigeons often symbolize:
* Peace and purity 
* Loyalty and return home 
* Freedom + attachment at the same time (they fly, but return)
This is how memory survives in our bodies.
Because in our culture, pigeons don’t leave.They return. Just like everything we come from. 🕊️
