The organization and their real estate partner, Monona-based Galway Companies Inc., received approval for a Certified Survey Map from the Monona Plan Commission on Monday, Aug. 26. The approval, which came via a 6-0 vote, combined two parcels of land needed to eventually facilitate the development. The first was a portion of the South Towne Office Park at the corner of Gisholt Drive and Engel Street. The second was an eastern portion of the WPS campus. Together, the proposed 11.5-acre site will span from the western side of the South Towne Mall to WPS when construction is completed. Combining the parcels and approving the map was necessary step and is an early indicator that the development is headed in the right direction. Plan commissioners commended Topgolf’s response to feedback following the company’s first presentation in June 2024. “I think the comprehensiveness of the team that’s come out tonight to present on this is a reflection of how seriously you’ve taken our concerns and interest,” Plan Commissioner Brandon Gries said. The plan that Topgolf presented on Aug. 26 included several changes suggested by the commission during the previous meeting: adding more masonry to the facade of the building removing high-definition TVs in the driving range outfield and adding more landscaping and green space on the property “We’ve made a pretty conscious effort to do a very responsible development of this property,” Topgolf’s Director of Real Estate Development Todd Waldo. Paul Johnson, a Monona resident, did speak over Zoom in opposition to the development during the meeting. Johnson stated he found the proposal to be a potential eyesore along the Beltline. Meanwhile, commissioners continued their steadfast support for the development. They have continually cited the potential economic growth that the entertainment facility could bring to the surrounding area and Monona community as a whole. “I think this is a great proposal for Monona. I think this will be a catalyst to redevelopment in that area,” Plan Commissioner Chris Homburg said.
