It’s not as dramatic as Hvar, not as famous as Brač, and not as polished as some of its Adriatic neighbors. And that’s exactly why we fell for it. Is Krk Island worth visiting? Why visit Krk Island? For views like this 🙂 What we found on Krk Island was something quieter: wild pebbly beaches, crystal-clear turquoise water, dramatic rocky hiking trails above the sea , and charming old towns where life moves slowly. If you’re wondering whether Krk Island is worth visiting, my answer is yes. But only if you know where to go. Whether you’re visiting for a day trip or a full week, here’s how to make the most of Krk. How to get to Krk Island? One of Krk’s biggest advantages is accessibility. Krk is connected to the mainland by the Krk Bridge (Krčki most), and it’s toll‑free (since June 2020). No ferries. No waiting. No schedules. This makes it perfect for: A Krk Island day trip A road trip stop Families who prefer simple logistics If you’re flying into Rijeka Airport, you’re already on Krk Island. Best beaches on Krk Island Krk Island beaches range from family-friendly town beaches to wild hidden coves . There’s no single “best” beach — it depends on what you’re looking for. Our favorite part of Krk is undoubtedly the bare and rocky southern region , and our favorite Krk beaches are also there. But before we talk about them in great detail, let us give you an overview of the Croatian beaches in general . Most are pebbly and rocky, and only a fraction of them are sandy beaches , usually with pebbles mixed in. Istria and Northern Dalmatia typically have sharp rocks and rough pebbles. Southern Dalmatia and the Makarska Riviera offer beaches with smoother, smaller pebbles. The islands? Each one is a world of their own , and they usually offer a variety of beach types. Krk is no exception. So let’s see what it has in store. Oprna Bay (our favorite beach on Krk) Oprna Bay is our absolute favorite. Located between Punat and Stara Baška, it’s not directly accessible by car. You park by the road (you’ll notice the other cars on the roadside) and walk about 15 minutes down a narrow, scenic coastal path. Type : Pebbly Parking : Free roadside Walking : 15 minutes Services : Seasonal beach bar, with umbrellas and deck chairs for rent Why do we love it? Crystal-clear water, perfect snorkeling conditions, dramatic rocky surroundings If you prefer staying closer to this part of the island, Punat and Baška are convenient bases. If you love snorkeling, bring your gear, because visibility here is incredible. We visited Oprna Bay with a toddler , carrying him in a child carrier down to the bay. It was a hot day, we wanted to be there quickly. On the way back, he had the chance to walk on his own, and he enjoyed observing tiny flowers and lizards. The pebbly beach has a gradual entrance and relatively smooth pebbles . But the water gets deep soon, so don’t let little ones out of arm’s reach. The more adventurous can continue walking north along the coastal trail for panoramic views and smaller hidden coves. Vela Plaža / Baška Beach (the most popular beach on Krk) The most famous beach on Krk for a reason. Well, for several reasons: easily accessible, offers full facilities and looks stunning. This turquoise, long pebbly beach is located in Baška. It offers views of the island of Prvić, and scenic walks starting on either side of the bay. Type : Pebbly Parking : Paid beach parking (limited— arrive early) Accessible by car? Yes Services : Restaurants and cafes Why do we love it? Great base on a southern Krk stay, easy access to coastal walks It’s often windy and quite busy in summer, but the scenery is impressive. Where to stay in Baška If you’d like to stay within walking distance of Vela Plaža and the scenic coastal trails, Baška is the most convenient base on Krk Island, especially if you’re planning to explore the southern coast. Here are two excellent, highly-rated options right by the beach: Luxury beachfront stay: Hotel Heritage Forza – boutique comfort just steps from Vela Plaža, with free private parking included. Beachfront apartment (great for families): Apartments Authentic Baška – kitchen facilities, family-friendly layout, and located right behind Vela Plaža with free parking. Sandy beaches on Krk Sandy beaches are rare in Croatia, but Krk has a few: Sveti Marak Beach (Risika) Pećine Beach (in the center of Šilo) Porporela Beach (Krk town – partly sandy) These are especially good options for families with small kids. More Krk beaches on Krk Easily accessible city beaches: Malin cove (pebbles and paved areas, near the center of Malinska) Miramare Beach (the main beach in Njivice) Wild coves and beaches: Coves south of Miramare Beach (a series of smaller beaches and coves connected by a coastal trail) Mala Luka Beach and Vela Luka Beach (accessible by boat or a longer walk – read on) Kozica Beach (pebbly one, 20 minutes walk from the center of Vrbnik) Plaža Javna and Plaža Mala Javna (by the road between Vrbnik and Risika) Potovošće Beach (near Vrbnik) The wild ones are our favorites. The lack of amenities are easily compensated by their unspoilt beauty if you ask me.  Soline Bay (shallow & unique) Soline Bay is known for its medicinal mud . People covered with mud from head to toe is a common sight there. You can walk almost 100 meters into the sea and still have water only up to your knees. It’s perfect for toddlers . Less ideal if you want deeper swimming. Except it rises straight from the sea. You hardly find any plants here (don’t even think of trees!) which is the result of the constant salty wind. This also means no shade and gorgeous views on these paths. If you’re planning multiple hikes, lightweight hiking poles make descents much easier. Proper sun protection and sturdy footwear are essential here, especially in summer. Bag & Ljubimer Scenic Loop from Baška Beach This picturesque hike starts directly from Baška Beach and climbs to Bag (185 m) and Ljubimer (220 m) . As ridiculous as 180-220 meters sounds, the views are breathtaking! No trees (no shade). Sea below you. Dramatic coastline surrounding you. You can enjoy amazing views over Baška Bay and of the uninhabited Otok Prvić. Go early or late in summer. Hiking essentials: Trailhead : Baška Beach, Baška Length : 4.6 km (loop) Time needed : 2 hours Difficulty : moderate Route: Baška Beach – Bag – Ljubimer – Baška Beach See the Bag & Ljubimer loop on a map here. Hike from Baška to Vela Luka Beach Vela Luka Bay is a beautiful, unspoilt one, but it’s not that easy to access. Mala Luka Beach is its similarly pretty sister. You can either go there by boat, or do a 2 hour hike from Baška . On a hot summer day we’d vote for the boat ride. On a cooler, cloudy September day we did the hike. It’s a scenic hike through the wild, rocky landscape, with amazing views of Baška Bay, the coastline, the mainland and other islands. We couldn’t enjoy the beach itself, as it was raining when we started our descent to Vela Luka Bay. However, our favorite view was that of Vela Luka and nearby Mala Luka Bays from above . And we had no reason to complain about the heat and the lack of shade on our way back either. Hiking essentials: Trailhead : paid parking lot by the dead-end road leading to Baška camping Length : 4.5 km one-way Time needed : 2 hours one-way Difficulty : moderate See the trail on a map here. Hiking to the highest peak of Krk: Veli vrh Why not conquer the highest peak of Krk Island? It’s short and sweet. Yeah, it’s very high. Veli vrh is 542 meters, but just like the other trails, it rewarded us with rocky landscapes and barely any plants, like a high mountain trail. Okay, the trail that we started from a pullout by the road from Baška towards Punat started on a paved path, lined with trees. But as we got higher, the bush replaced the trees, and then even the bush disappeared. The views were not as breathtaking as those on the coastal trails, but Veli vrh offers a nice panorama of the island and its surroundings. Hiking essentials: Trailhead : dirt pullout by the road D102 from Baška to Punat Length : 3.2 km one-way Time needed : 1.5 hours one-way Difficulty : moderate See the Veli vrh track on a map here. Things to do in Krk Town The largest settlement on the island is the town of Krk, with a population of about 6000 people. Quite a lovely small town, yes. And it’s among the oldest towns on the Adriatic coast . It dates back to the Illyrians and later the Romans. We could find Roman ruins there even today, like mosaics in the houses. Frankopan Castle, one of the main sights, is a medieval fortification. The town is fortified even today: there are four doors that give access to those narrow, cobbled streets and ancient ruins. The main square is called Kamplin , and it was a training area during Roman times. Today’s sacred church complex was built over the leftovers of a Roman spa. The town walls offer nice views of the Adriatic Sea. Krk Town highlights: Frankopan Castle Roman mosaics Kamplin Square Medieval walls Narrow cobbled streets We walked around in Krk town within a few hours , and really, that’s about the time you need. After that, spend your time on the beaches (in or out of the town), or take a boat trip: Take a boat trip to Golden Beach & the Blue Cave One of the most memorable Krk excursions is a half-day cruise that explores the wild coastline around Plavnik Island. On this tour you can: Swim inside the stunningly blue Plavnik Cave Relax and take photos at Golden Beach Spot Griffon vultures in their natural habitat It’s a fantastic option if you’d like to see hidden beaches that are otherwise difficult to access — without hiking in the heat. This is also one of the best activities on Krk Island with kids, as it combines swimming, wildlife spotting, and plenty of excitement. This is exactly how we’d plan it again. This itinerary assumes you have a car — highly recommended for exploring Krk, as many of the best beaches and trailheads are not accessible by public transport.
