It was built in 1818 for John Craighead in the federal style. John Craighead died in 1826, and his wife Temperance Nelson continued to live in the house until she died in 1842. The house stayed in the family until 1855 when it was sold after the death of John and Temperance's son, James. William G. Swam owned the house for a year while he was mayor of Knoxville. The house was then purchased by George W. Jackson, whose wife was Elizabeth V. Truslow. They owned the house until 1885 when it was bought by Samuel Thacker Atkins, who owned the house only for a few months.\n\nCaspar Aebli was the next owner with his wife Magdalena Blum in 1886. Caspar lived there until his death in 1914, and his wife lived there for a few years after. After Magdalena died in 1924, the house remained in the Aebli family, though it became a rental property. In the 1940s it was divided up into apartments and heavily altered.\n\nIn 1957, the state of Tennessee and the city of Knoxville purchased the house to save it from demolition. In 1962, the house was turned over to the Blount Mansion Association so that it could be restored. In 1966 in opened as a visitor center with offices for the Blount Mansion. In 1995, a new visitor's center was completed and the house was used as storage and mostly closed to the public.
