More than 30,000 acres of scenery dotted with herds of cattle, the occasional bison, and bald eagles perched high in the ponderosa pines (if you know where to look). And plenty of ways to live out your cowboy fantasies, from horseback riding and cattle drives, to fly fishing and whitewater rafting. But the sprawling ranch also has a little secret: the Green O , a sort of boutique hotel-within-a-hotel tucked in the forest with 12 standalone cabins and its own restaurant. Guests of the Green O have full access to the activities, restaurants, and grounds of Paws Up—but not vice versa. In other words, you’re getting the best of both worlds: The luxuriously rugged and Pendleton-swaddled Wild West vibe for which you have come to Montana, coupled with a modern and serene (and kid-free!) refuge to get away from it all. Though you should do more than treat the Green O as a peaceful place to sleep after a full day of Dutton-esque pursuits —in addition to the aforementioned activities, don’t miss a hike up to Lookout Rock, which happens to be the same point Meriweather Lewis climbed on his way back from his expedition with William Clark—because it arguably has some of the best food on the property. Think: black truffle shavings layered over Dungeness crab, decadent strips of Wagyu beef, duck breast in a huckleberry sauce, a twist on cacio e pepe made with root vegetables, black cod and miso. As for where to cure that inevitable food coma, we asked Paws Up Montana managing director Steve Hurst to name some favorites. What do you consider the best room at the property—and why? I love the Light Haus for the luxurious king bed the feels like it is in the forest and the large bath and shower suite. It starts at $2,640 per night. How would you describe the vibe of the hotel? A luxurious wilderness escape defined by both adventure and tranquility, where guests can pursue exhilarating outdoor experiences or immerse themselves in quiet exploration, often within the same stay. The resort seamlessly blends classic Western ranch heritage with refined living, set against expansive skies, working cattle drives, and pristine riverfront landscapes. Paws Up There’s a lot to see (from a safe distance) on Paws Up’s 37,000 acres of land. What are some local attractions or secret spots that you like to recommend? There are several special places we love—both on the property and through guided experiences—from the Elevation Mountain summit and the Clearwater River confluence, to more unexpected stops like Garnet Ghost Town and the Lebrecht Experimental Forest. For something more remote, Salmon Lake Island Lodge offers a truly tucked-away experience. It’s often the quieter moments that stay with guests most, like discovering hidden swimming holes along the Blackfoot River, where the sun lingers until after 10 p.m. on a warm summer evening. “There’s something about the landscape that invites you to slow down.” What do guests find most surprising about the property? What surprises them most is the contrast. The scale can feel vast at first, with 37,000 acres of open landscape, but it quickly becomes something much more personal through the way our team takes care of each guest. Another surprise is just how much there is to do. Whether someone is looking for adventure, time to unwind, or a bit of both, the range of experiences is broad but still feels thoughtfully put together. What is the feeling that you hope your guests will take away from their experience? I hope they leave with a sense of renewal and connection, to nature and to each other. There’s something about the landscape that invites you to slow down, and when that’s paired with thoughtful experiences and genuine hospitality, it creates space to reconnect in a way that feels both meaningful and lasting. The Green O The Green O’s 12 cabins, including Light Haus, are sprinkled among the trees to make them feel completely remote (but not too much). Best time of year to visit, and why? If I had to choose, spring and autumn are the most extraordinary times to visit. From the renewal of spring to the stunning fall palette of colors and flavors, each season reveals the landscape in a completely different way, both visually and experientially.
