Step 8: Common Failure Points and Field Fixes 
Overview 
Most balcony waterproofing failures are predictable and preventable. This step documents the most
frequent field failures observed during installation and flood testing, with root causes and approved
fixes. 
Failure 1: Membrane Bubble or Blister 
Symptom: Dome-shaped lift in the membrane field, typically found during cure inspection. Root cause: 
Primer applied over damp substrate, primer applied too thick, or membrane installed before primer
reached tack-free state. Fix: 
1. Slit the bubble at one end with a utility knife. 
2. If there is moisture under the membrane, allow to fully dry (may take 24-48 hrs). 
3. Apply fresh SP1 primer inside the slit and to the underside of the lifted membrane flap. 
4. Press flat, roll firmly, and apply a membrane patch (minimum 6 in. beyond the slit in all directions). 
Failure 2: Lap Edge Fishmouth 
Symptom: Open gap at a seam lap edge, visible during seam inspection or flood test. Root cause: 
Insufficient seam roller pressure, roll installed over a high spot, or cold membrane. Fix: 
1. Lift the fishmouth edge as far as it will go without tearing. 
2. Apply SP1 primer under the lifted edge. Allow to reach tack-free. 
3. Press and roll firmly. Apply heat gun on low setting if the membrane is stiff. 
4. Apply a membrane patch over the repaired lap (minimum 3 in. past the fishmouth in all directions). 
Failure 3: Transition Leak at Inside Corner 
Symptom: Water infiltration at deck-to-wall junction during flood test or in service. Root cause: No cove
bead, membrane bridging at corner (not pressed into cove radius), or insufficient membrane height on

vertical. Fix: 
1. Remove the membrane at the corner for minimum 12 in. each way. 
2. Install a proper cove bead. Allow to cure. 
3. Prime the cove and vertical. Re-apply membrane, pressing fully into the radius. 
4. Confirm minimum 6 in. of membrane on the vertical above topping surface. 
Failure 4: Drain Leak 
Symptom: Water appears below the deck near the drain location during flood test. Root cause: 
Membrane not embedded in clamping ring, clamping ring not fully tightened, or seam within 12 in. of
drain. Fix: 
1. Remove the drain strainer and clamping ring. 
2. Inspect the membrane under the ring. If torn or incomplete, apply a membrane patch. 
3. Re-embed the membrane in the clamping ring and tighten to the drain manufacturer torque
specification. 
4. Re-run the flood test after fix. 
Failure 5: Scupper Edge Leak 
Symptom: Water weeps from the scupper flange area or behind the exterior scupper face. Root cause: 
Membrane cut at the outside of the flange instead of inside the throat (most common), or flange not
fully primed. Fix: 
1. Apply a formed membrane patch over the exposed flange edge, extending minimum 3 in. onto the
field membrane and into the scupper throat. 
2. Press firmly. Re-run the flood test.
