# Farmhouse in a Meadow by Elliott Architects

Farmhouse in a Meadow dredges up memories of this pastoral region, where farmsteads were often organized around a big house, summer kitchen, and barn built over time. Here, staggered, side-by-side volumes with glass between them echo and update that arrangement. Centering the composition is the tallest structure holding the main living spaces and upstairs bedrooms for the owners’ visiting children. Sliding past it is a one-story primary suite on the east and a garage and upper-level flex space on the west. Each volume evokes the farmhouse vernacular with a pitched metal roof, white clapboard siding, and tight trim. “We like that those older buildings created exterior spaces, such as a dooryard or livestock pen,” says Matt Elliott, AIA. “These volumes are sited to create microclimates that capture the sun in a little courtyard, and it’s warm and protected.” The jury praised the house’s “simple material palette, wonderful proportions, and clear plan.” An open stair ascends into the double-height space and gallery above the dining table, taking advantage of the gabled form.
