In The News Images and Voice Memos Now Available in TikTok Direct Messages September 04, 2025 TikTok is joining the ranks of Instagram and Snapchat with its latest feature , which expands how users can send direct messages. This move is most likely an attempt to get users to view TikTok as a messaging hub in addition to a viral content source.  We see this sort of cross-platform consolidation often as the top platforms angle to steal users away from each other and convince people to spend more time on their respective apps. Most recently, we witnessed Instagram launching its Friend Map to compete with Snapchat’s Snap Map. Prior to this new update, TikTok users were only able to send TikTok videos, GIFs, stickers, and text responses in DMs. Now, users can also send images, their own videos, and record voice memos, as well.  Parents should take note of this new feature as it presents yet another avenue for the sending of potentially dangerous or inappropriate content. While TikTok has stated that DMs aren’t available for users under 16, not every child registers their TikTok account as a minor, and TikTok doesn’t have a 100% foolproof way of verifying a user’s age.  The only (slightly) good (bare-minimum) news? DMs from strangers can’t start with an image, which will help limit the amount of unsolicited inappropriate images. But apart from that, this new feature will only increase the potential for danger when it comes to young people.
