A season of dinners where everyone tells you how remarkable it is — what you built, what you achieved, what you walked away with. And then the dinners end. The calls slow down. The calendar, which was never empty for twenty years, starts to have mornings that belong to no one. You're not unhappy. You're not struggling. You're just somewhere you didn't expect to be. And here's what makes it harder: You can't talk about it. Who admits, after the career most people would trade theirs for in a heartbeat, that they feel lost? There's no language for this. No ritual. No one brings food. So it goes underground. It becomes the gap between the story you're telling and the reality you're living. I've sat across from extraordinary people at exactly this moment. Founders. Partners. Executives. People who built things that genuinely mattered. Here's what I've seen every single time: The capability didn't go anywhere. The recipe that built the first act — The specific way they think, decide, see around corners — It's all still there. They just couldn't find it without the container that used to make it visible. That's the work I do now. And the book I'm writing — Lightning Strikes Twice — exists because this experience is more common than anyone talks about, and more solvable than it feels in the middle of it. My life changed in an instant. I retired from my CPO job after he passed. I took time to grieve, to find out who I was after 30+ years marriage.
