Staub was born in 1892 in Knoxville as well. He went to UT for mathematics, then on to MIT for architecture. After graduation, he worked for Harrie T. Lindeberg in NYC. Staub moved to Houston, TX in 1921 and ended up starting his own practice there. In addition to the Eugenia Williams house, he also designed Hopecote in Knoxville. Regency style combines classical architecture with iron materials from the Industrial Revolution, originally popular in the early 1800s in the UK. The regency revival style was popular in the US between the 1930s and 1950s. Staub's time in Texas led him to give the house many windows for cross-ventilation and daylighting. Connection to the outdoors was also an important part of regency architecture, which is reflected in the landscape design. Apparently Eugenia was such a demanding client that she gave Staub stress hives.
